Someone was asking about making a faux wood background and this is my little quicky that I use. I'm sure that there are many more that are much better, but this is a super basic on that I think might come in handy for someone.

And this is the resulting image. It makes me think of a wooden deck.

I like that! It can be any size and it's not tiled like the wood patterns in Gimp. There is something to be said for making things by hand from scratch, I should do more of it.
Very nice tutorial, although I can't say much for my inability to make a decent knot, lol.

I agree.
Knowing how to create your own wood grain can be really handy.
Cool tut! :coolthup

Great tutorial PhotoMaster. Will play with this one a lot more. Like 2-ton I agree it is so much better to make what you need and, also like 2-ton, couldn't get my knots right

How can this, or any pattern, be made seamless? I cannot find instructions even though I know they are here somewhere...I am terrible at the search page.

Thanks PhotoMaster. It has been funny and easy! :bigthup
2-ton, I have it in Filters-Map-Make seamless. but this pattern can't be done seamless in Gimp by this way. Have you looked for it in GMIC?

2-ton, I did it seamless in GMIC - Arrays & Tiles - Make seamless patch-based. Then I adjusted it a little and I got this.

Thanks guys! I need to make some kind of filter list with tags so I can find things! I never seem to look in the right places.

Here I duplicated the Bump layer prior to blurring it and placing the un-blurred copy above the wood layer. I set it to Grain Extract and merged it with the wood layer. This gave it more wood texture. This could be step 7a.

PhotoMaster, question, how do I achieve the "edges of bell curve". Have to be honest - left that part out perhaps the reason my texture doesn't look as defined?

Dalia, After a while, I thought that it meant that you adjust black and white triangles just to the edges of the black bell shape that you see when you open levels. :)
