EDIT: I replaced the first picture as I had to fix the font spacing. (See image at bottom of page)

1) Create a new image 1000x250
2) Fill image with "Pink Marble" background. (or any you choose)
3) Right click on "Background" layer in Layer list and select "Add Alpha Channel"
4) Create a text layer using font of your choice. (I used Puppylike 184px)
5) Right click on "Text" layer in Layer list and select "Alpha to Selection"
6) Layer>Crop to selection
7) Select>None
8) Using the "Align" tool, click on the text. (there should now be four white dots around text layer)
9) Click on Vertical Center and Horizontal Center in tool palette.
10) Right click on "Text" layer in Layer list and select "Layer to Image Size"
11) Right click on "Text" layer in Layer list and select "Alpha to Selection"
12) Turn off visibility of text layer and click on background layer.
13) Edit>Cut
14) Select>None
15) Filter>Alpha to Logo>3D Bevel
16) Set 3D to 20 and click on "Ok"
17) You should now have a new image with the your 3D block and your text cut out of it.
Note: Spacing may need to be adjusted in Step 4 if cuts overlap.
18) Right click on "Background Copy) layer in Layer list and select "Alpha to Selection"
19) Select>To Path
20) Select>None
21) Set foreground color to white (code "FFFFFF")
22) Create new transparent layer above "Background Copy" named "Cut Edges"
23) Edit>Stroke Path using Solid color and line width of 2
24) Set layer opacity to 50%.
25) Image>Canvas Size Width=1250, Height=500 and click "Center" and "Resize" (added 250 to each original dimension)
26) Right click on background layer and select "Layer to Image Size"
27) Filters>Light and Shadow>Drop Shadow Use default values except turning off "Allow Resizing"
28) Create new transparent layer below Shadow layer, named "Slab"
29) Fill "Slab" layer with same background image used on the cutout slab.
30) Filter>Alpha to Logo>3D Bevel
31) Set 3D to 20 and click on "Ok"
32) Move "Slab Copy" layer to second from bottom (just above "Slab" layer.
33) You should now have a new image with the your 3D block and your 3D Slab.
34) Turn on visibility of all layers except the original text layer
35) Right click on "Slab Copy" layer in Layer list and select "Alpha to Selection"
36) Select>To Path
37) Select>None
38) Set foreground color to white (code "FFFFFF")
39) Create new transparent layer above "Slab Copy" named "Cut Slab Edges"
40) Edit>Stroke Path using Solid color and line width of 2
41) Set layer opacity to 50%.
42) Image>Canvas Size Width=1400, Height=800 and click "Center" and "Resize"
43) Right click on "Slab" layer in Layer list and select "Layer to Image Size"
44) Filters>Light and Shadow>Drop Shadow Use default values except turning off "Allow Resizing"
45) Create new transparent layer below new Shadow layer, named "Wall"
46) Fill "Wall" layer with wall color of choice. (I used "00C6F8")
47) Create new transparent layer below "Wall" layer, named "Bump"
48) Fill Bump layer with "3D Green" Pattern.
49) Select "Wall" layer.
50) Filters>Map>Bumpmap Using default settings except setting Depth to 1.
51) Select "Background" and use lasso tool to select the cut out text area of slab (accuracy isn't too important)
52) Select>Invert.
53) Adjust the levels to make Text Cut Slab sides a little darker (to taste)
54) Select>None
52) Repeat step 53 on "Slab" layer using the same adjustments.

It can be modified for weird shapes, too!

EDIT: After I posted this I saw I had accidentally doubled up the edging on this one. Sorry!

PhotoMaster: I am having trouble doing your tut. I'm OK until step 16. I never get your results from that filter. I do not have a 3D block and the text is not cut out. What other settings are needed to get the 3D effect on the block and slab edges. The results of that filter are in another image and must be added to the main image, so I might have some
confusion there also. I must be either making a selection wrong or the different parameters in the 3D dialog need adjusted. I need help getting the correct outcome at this step. I worked through the entire tut to see if I would get the 3D effect at some point but it did not happen.

Pat, I had problem to find the right filter, too. Finally I found it under Script-Fu - Make 3d. That one is the right one to use. I don't know the reason that I have some filters shown in a different place that other members.
I finished the tut, although I didn't get it so perfect as PhotoMaster's. :bigthup
Thank you PhotoMaster for your tut. :tyspin :coolthup

Thank you, Issabella. I'll try to find the correct 3D script. I don't think I have the correct one though, I searched every place that has scripts and plug ins.

Pat, I post it for you a copy. It's a script and after setting it in the right folder, you may find it in Script-Fu - 3Dtext - Make 3d. (it is as I found it) not easy because many members have it under Filters, Alpha to Logo.

I use the 2028_mhbevel3D script and only change the 3D level to 20. You want to make sure the layer with the text cut out is the active (selected) layer. This script should actually create a duplicate file, containing all the layers from the original, with the addition of the Background copy Layer and modifying the Background Layer to the 3D layer.

I ran through the tutorial again to verify it. Let me know if you find the problem to be the script or the tutorial.

Skinnyhouse, I love it!

Pat, this Gimpchat block is following the tutorial ending at 17 to show what should be happening and resuming at 45 to give a background wall.
I hope this helps.

Thank you, Photomaster, That is the script that I have been using but I cannot get the 3D edging around the perimeter of the block.

Edit:
SkinnyHouse : "2028_mhbevel3D script is found from ScriptFu>MH>bevel3d on my system."

This is finally the correct script!! I have another that has the same number and title but is found under Filters/Script fu/mh/bevel3D. It has about 18 dialog box parameters to set and none of them gave me a 3D edge or cut out. That was my big confusion all along. I did not have the correct script even though it has the same name.
Thank you SkinnyHouse!!!

Thank you for the tut, PhotoMaster. Your instructions made a lot of sense as soon as I found the correct filter. I don't understand how the two can be named the same and be so different but now I know which one to use. I love the effect you achieve with your tutorial!

Tin should see this. He will probably want to make a script of it!!
