Thanks PAT625. It's an exercise in concentration. :hehe At least you got a result. I was doubting PhotoMaster's tut
thinking there was a puzzle in it but it was just my inability to read instructions properly.

I have never been able to solve Rubiks cube either.

Tas_mania that's great man, I dig your graphene in alcohol pattern as well.
I've spent a week at this, and even with PhotoMaster's kind and patient help, I can't get it. I know I'm misreading steps 15 - 34 somehow.
I'm renaming the layers 1- 36
following steps 17 - 24
then repeating 35 more times - each time I'm renaming the Rubiks cube layer (top layer after running script) 1, 2, 3, and so on, dragging, in turn onto previously saved image.
If any of you think you can help I would be most grateful. I'm determined to crack this one after spending so much time trying and trying. Thank you. :gaah

The animation goes from the inner cube outwards. If you do it right you will take a revolving inner cube up to the next revolving cube which carries it and so on.
I was failing to copy-paste my layers into their right sequence. For example the copied layer 6 goes into the number six layer.
The copied number 7 does into the number 7 slot and so on. There is a lot of counting of keystrokes involved.

I was dragging/pasting all layers into the number 1 slot. When that happens the previous cube stops rotating.
This is like the original Rubiks cube - a test of people's patience and determination. Good luck. :clap

Sorry for the unannounced absence.

I just got a program to create video tutorials, so when I play with it I will try to make this into a video tutorial.

Hi PhotoMaster.
I modified the Rubik's Cube script by Graechan to not have segments.
This does not qualify as a new script because it's just a minor edit.

So people can use both scripts I called it 'No-Rubiks-Cube.scm' and uploaded here:

This is an experimental 'quad nested animation'. Optimized it's still 3.6Mb. I discovered that converting animated GIFs to WEBM
reduces them by a large amount. Not sure how to work with the webm format and it looks like the
gimp chat 'advanced editor' doesn't either :)

This is not my easiest tutorial, but you learn a whole lot about layers!

For anyone who's gif file is too large, while in your finished xcf file, go to
Filters> Animation> Optimize for GIF
This will erase unneeded (duplicated) areas of some layers and give you a much smaller file with all the same data.

I finally finished my second attempt at the tripled nested cube and I hope there are no problems with it. I could not find any, so please let me know.

Excellent image Pat! Everything looks right on the money!!

This tutorial can be quite confusing (Sorry) and you got it!

Racer-X,
Love the scratching head cube!

Racer-X was Speed Racer's brother if memory serves?

Racer-X was Sped Racer's brother, but I choose that login because I'm an ex-Racer. I used to dragrace motorcycles back in the day.

Your tut is well done, but I never follow directions. Choosing instead to get inspired to make my own version. I used the regular Cube filter, because I don't like the lines. Unless there's a way to disable them? I have little experience with Gimp, but that will soon change as I'm 100 % Linux these days.

Now for something a little different.

I used to race bicycles with the United States Cycling Federation. Many, many years ago!

That's how I learned most of what I know. You just need something to simply spark an idea and then decide to find a way to do what you want! And I can see that this is what you do! Very creative work!

Congratulations on this. :jumpclap
Looks like you dropped a frame or two. I dropped a frame on my last one and had to reduce it down to 35 layers.
Thats probably about as 'forgiving' as this process is. :gaah
I remembered a lot of GIF optimization involves deleting layers.
It's pretty hard to put a layer back after accidentally deleting it.

GIFs get a pretty bad rap on the net these days but it's not exactly easy to make an MP4
or a WEBM video clip loop outside of whatever player a user is viewing it on.

A script to automate the 'triple nested animation' could possibly just process one phase and apply
drop shadow and the 36 replacement layers in the correct series.
Rotations and backgrounds could be done manually and then the script could be run on the next phase.
Maybe one day.......

Looking good!! This process is kind of drawn out and there must be a dozen ways to drop a layer or create an extra blank layer. I've done it myself many times. I would drop those two blanked out layers. The impact shouldn't be much of anything and it actually looks like they may only be extra layers. If they are just extra layers, then there will only be a positive impact because your image would be 100%!.

I am thinking about scripting it, but I haven't coded in a few years and it would take me a little bit to get started again. Being very lazy right now. Only just recently getting back my Gimp creativity after a couple of years out of commision.

Very cool! I still ride my Mountain Bike 5 miles a day for exercise. No chance I'd enter in a race with it however. :)

Since you like my "head Scratching GIF", here ya go. Use it at will.

RJKD, I really like your animation. Your "glitch" looks like what I did the first time. Very easy to do. I kept counting and recounting all the time the second time around so I could find it before I went to the next phase. You did a good job.
