This is one of the first things I learned to do in GIMP. I don't remember where or who I learned it from but it has remained one of my favorite GIMP things. It is an understated, elegant and classy finish to just about any kind of image, and it is very quick and easy to do.

A drawback is that it does not show well on red. I believe it is because in RGB color, black is a color of red.

Image

  1. Open an image you want to put a border on.

  2. Make a new, transparent layer and name it, border.

  3. Ctrl + A to make a selection of the layer. You will see marching ants going around the image.

  4. Make the Foreground color black and the Background color white.

  5. Edit > Stroke Selection, make the Line width 10.

  6. Press the X key to switch the Foreground and Background colors. The FG color is now white and the BG color is black.

  7. Edit > Stroke Selection. Make the stroke line width 8.

  8. Press the X key. FG color = black.

  9. Edit > Stroke Selection. Make the line width 5.

  10. Select > None.

  11. Set the border layer mode to Overlay.

  12. Merge the border layer to the image layer.

  13. Save your image.

You are done. It's quick, fun and easy. :hehe

It also works nicely on photos, color or black and white.

Very nice border and tutorial. :coolthup :bigthup

I'm surprised there isn't a script to make that type of border. :(

love that border, and it's so simple to do! A script would be cool, as long as you could set the width of each stroke and the colors.

Script requests should be posted in the Gimp Scripts & Plugins forum.

I never thought of using different colors and widths.

Here is one that is done with red and green, line widths 20, 16 & 10. Figured percentages would work:
  • 80% of stroke 1 for stroke 2
  • 50% of stroke 1 for the third stroke.

Filled an image with plasma just to try it out.

I have used colors before, although usually fairly neutral colors, and different modes, too. You can get some very interesting results!

bkh1914 has written a script to make it even easier and faster.
