Hi all,

I've been trying to find a good quality tutorial for creating engraved/inset text using GIMP, but I couldn't find one. So I decided to work it out myself and have written the following tutorial which people may find useful. You can see it here: http://www.freshpage.co.uk/inset-typogr ... -with-gimp

I wanted gold text engraved on black. Perhaps my choice of a black background was not a good choice. Nice tutorial, Alex. Thanks!

Here is my version. I was unable to do the inner shadow because the (Script-Fu Inner Shadow dialog is completely different from what is shown on the tute.

Tried it with greens. My black bg just didn't work well. I like this effect. Quietly elegant.

Molly> you should be able to work it out with a bit of playing. As a first attempt try
degrees: 120
distance: 2
choke: 0
size: 3
layer mode: not sure? Does it have "normal" or "linear"? If so try those.

You'll also need to make the colour of the text darker otherwise it won't look inset.

Ana> looks like your light coloured drop shadow is the wrong side - it should be towards the bottom right of the letters, as if the light is hitting the far side of the indentation

Oregonian> nice! :)

Thanks Alex. I now have the proper script so the correct dialog box comes up now, so I will try another one tonight.

Great idea, Cecilia. Hm, maybe I'll take my green one through rotate colors and see what happens.

Now my green one is gold. I ran it thru brightness & contrast, too.

I know a variation of this text effect, which does include a few more steps.
It also doesn't include the use of Script-Fu Inner Shadow or any other script.
It's all done manually.
You can get results like what can be seen in the screenshot below.
The effect is also more controllable,
given that it's done manually.
Which means that you can adjust each layer as you see fit.

Image

If there's any interest.
I'm willing to make a tutorial showing the steps involved.

Thanks Molly.
The shadow can be adjusted to suite the way you want it to look.
Here are the setting I use for the drop-shadow in my screenshot.

Maybe I didn't mean the shadow. I meant the outside edges of those two letters.

I see what you mean Molly.
This can be fixed by using a layer mask, or whatever method one uses to remove jagged edges.
