Thanks! I forgot to attach a couple of things though. Here's the Grunge pic I used (guess you could use anything) and the font. If I forgot anything else let me know.

The font is DeVinneOrn and you can get it here...

Well I finally got through it, wow, what a long tute, you put a lot of work into that one Drac. I got sort of tangled up in some of the steps so I fudged it so it didn't come out as nice as yours, anyway, here it is.

Looks pretty darn good to me Molly. I may know where the tangled up part was. Was it the add layer mask on the duplicate grunge layer? Supposed to be just a black layer at 40% with the text selection deleted. I screwed that part up and one other I found. I'll get it corrected and posted Monday. Sorry about that.

I think the bump map looks a little better set to spherical instead of sinusoidal and depth at 3 instead of 5 so it's not quite pronounced. Kinda smooths it out a little so it's not so ragged looking.

Like I said, this was a PS tut so all the hard work was done by someone else I just wanted to recreate it in GIMP cuz I thought it was really cool looking.

I had to put this aside for the moment. The clarification for step 30 didn't really clarify things for me. I know it's been a while but any enlightenment, Draconian?

See if this helps....

30. In the Layers dialog, right click on the top text layer and select
New Layer. When the dialog comes up, tick the button
that says Foreground color Set the layer Opacity
to about 40%. Rename this layer to “Dark Mask”. Right click
the text layer below to activate it (no need to tick the eye and
make it visible) and select Alpha to Selection. Reselect the
Dark Mask layer to make it active again then just hit Delete to
cut out the text from the mask layer. This will darken the
background without darkening the text further.

Not sure which part of this step was unclear but I tried to reword it to make sure the "Dark Mask" layer was the one that has the text area "cut out".

Edit: I actually did a sort of "remake" of this in my Metal Wurx series. The segment is called Pitted Metal but I did a search and it was not listed in either my posts or in the topics list for May 14th. Luckily someone responded to it recently so Here's the link.

Little different approach, but similar results. You may want to try that one instead. It's not nearly as long winded as my first tutorial attempt. Thanks for trying the tut.

Hi Drac, like Rod , I had never seen this one. I did not do the oval drop shadows on the bottoms of the letters as I feel they spoil the picture. I can't readily visualise a situation where you have shadows behind and below the same letters so I skipped 31 to 35 and went to the last step. I do like your little touch of the orange layer in the tut. Was that the equivalent of the Photoshop vibrance or photo filter layer?
I really like the outcome and can see some use for this technique in Role Playing Game scenarios. It has real dungeons and dragons atmosphere. Nice Tut !! Thank You.

I agree with you on the small oval shadows under the letters. This was taken from an old photoshop tut I found a long time ago so go figure. I think the orange layer was an attempt at a slightly rusty look which I think adds to the vintage appearance kinda like how the G'MIC 60's Cinema effect works just not so pronounced. Who knows what the original tut's author was thinking. I think the Metal Wurxs looks just as good if not betterthan this one but then I could be a bit biased. If you take another look at that segment you'll see I didn't use the oval shadows either.

I was going to come back with specific questions but I think I ditched the file in order to start all over. Between the words and the pictures I just got all mixed up. Thanks for trying to help.

Edit: I must be missing something obvious if other people are making it through. Here's my result. I'll just move on to your other tutorials.

I just spent about a half hour trying to figure that out. Since this was a year ago things may have changed but it looks like now you have to download the other font program ( and all the other adware and spybots) to be able to download anything. Devinne Orn is a commercial font so I'm at a loss too. They did have some other cool fonts though. I can give you the one font if you like or were you trying to get some of the others?

Thanks Bug, I vaguely remember posting it somewhere. I think Molly asked for it once before and I copied it out of my Fonts folder for her.

Molly, i find it interesting that the one you posted from Fonts 101.com is actually a different font from the original DeVinneOrn font copyrighted by URW that I used. I have to admit it looks exactly the same to me. Surely there has to be some subtle difference I didn't notice for them to get around the copyright.
