Open gimp, and choose your font and type what ever you want.. i used font called "Toonish".
Image

Select your perspective tool and bend the text down to the back like this... in the image and click on transform.
Image

Now dublicate the text layer.
Image

After you dublicated the layer uncheck the first layer cuz we will be working with the original one.
Image

now right-click on the layer and select "Alpha to selection".
Image

Now change the color to a darker color, im my case i changed it to grey.
Image

now select none.
Image

Now go to layer and click on layer to image size.
Image

Now go to filters > Blur > Motion Blur and change the setting as the following in the pic.
Image

after bluring it dublicate it alot, i dublicated it 35 times.
Image

now remember the layer that we unchecked in the begining, check it again make it visible.
Image

This is the final result!

Welcome to Gimp Chat, youssef.

I like your tutorial. It's easy and very effective. I duplicated the bottom layer until I had 7 because I kind of liked the slightly transparent edges around it.

Thanks for the cool tutorial. :paint

Here's my attempt, I do like this method as I can actually remember it without referring to notes, lol.

Hmmm, that almost looks like cement or packed snow. A hint of aqua and it would look like ice!

here is an image other than text using the same tutorial steps...very nice effect, and quick.
the drop shadow from layer effects probably would have worked out better and more realistic looking.
that way each individual rock would have its own shadow...i used a duplicate layer and just blurred it and dropped it down under....quicker...lol
i used 2.7 to do this so none of my python scripts work..ill have to figure out how to get them to work in this version.

I love the simplicity of this tut, and how well it works! On the lower layer, I applied a gradient to each letter, before blurring it. By doing it for each letter one at a time, I could vary the angles to give the following effect. Then I continued with the tutorial. Finally I merged all the layers except the background and added a drop shadow.

Here is my result:

Wow that looks great PhotoMaster! =)
I wonder if this would make for an easy script? (SCM)
Possibly allow for gradients or patterns in the lower layers?

Ill post something for saulgoode or fencepost to check it out.

Hi all,

I read thru this tut. Can someone enlighten me as to the reason for duplicating so many layers?

(newbie)

Because you want the text to appear thick, like its 3D and all those layers plus the blurring creates that exact effect. =)
