After viewing Rod's great tut on making wires, I was reminded of another tutorial I saw someplace. I'll have to look for it again and I'll post it whenever I find it.

I'm also looking for another one at the moment cuz I used three different methods to make the pic below.

That top layer of armored cable (BX cable) looks really good.

I hope you find the tutorial - I'm interesting in seeing it.

Found it! Thanks for the comments guys.

http://thinkmoult.com/2010/09/27/the-gi ... -tutorial/

I think the tutorial was made in an earlier version of GIMP because of the way the lines were done to make the segments. The way I did the lines was Filters>Render>
Patterns>Grid and just set the vertical to 0 and adjusted the line spacing and line thickness. Made it really simple, otherwise a fairly easy tut to follow.

Yes, I was trying to make the cable look like MC cable but you are right. MC has a full sized ground wire and even BX has a small aluminum drain wire. I may have to make a couple of small changes to the pic. I was thinking that the composition could use something like some corroded metal gears here and there to give it more of an industrial feel.

I made a set of open circle brushes, some feathered on the inside, to stroke a path and just experimented to make the cable. Due to the multiplication effect of the circle brush, I got this really dark edge so to remove it, all I had to do was adjust the brush just a tad bigger than I needed and then do an alpha to selection/shrink/delete to make it look right.
