Just a quick and easy tutorial in making snow.

1) open gimp

2) new layer, fill it any colour by using the colour fill bucket icon :bucket

3) Text layer, Type in any text to any size you wish

4) New layer for the snow, At the top of the each letter use the a small round brush and swirl it round on top of the letter. No smudging involved.

And there you have snow.

This is actually pretty easy to do with 2 text layers.
Create a colored one - create a white one - select the white (alpha to selection) - erase away the bottom part of the white. Then its up to you to blur, or shadow the layer.I added a shadow under the white layer here by just duplicating the white text layer after erasing and dropping it under the original white text layer. Then just blur it or move it a bit. :)
I used plasma on the black text to make it look like ice.
I also used LayerFX.py filter with inner shadow to give the snow more depth. (just default settings)

Pretty simple.

You can create bigger snow on top (fluffier), by just going to select>grow and grow by 3-4 the white text layer after erasing. Then refill with white and run the shadow and inner shadow effects after. Then its all about adding some sky and other stuff. :) - This was pretty quick and obviously with more time cold be much better looking.

Maybe i will create a tutorial later for it.
