Another accident that came from experimenting with Draconian's metal tutorials. You will need G'MIC.

G'MIC

Set your FG and BG colours to dark and light grey ang use your gradient fiil tool to create a gradient making sure the gradient is set to FG to BG.

Image

Create a new layer and open Filters>render>clouds>solid noise. Use the values below and press New Seed until you have something fairly light.

Image

Put the layer into Grain Merge mode and merge down.

Image

Duplicate the layer and run G'MIC>Colours>Metallic Look, adjusting the smoothness to produce a little banding.

Image

Reduce the opacity and merge down.

Image

Open Colours>colourize and get the colour you want. I used these values.

Image

Image

Make any final adjustments and do what you want to with the wood.

Not many folks on the board right now so I get a chance to post before anyone else beats me to it. It never even occurred to me that the chrome curves could be used to make would grain textures. I will have to play with this a bit more. Thanks Erisian!

I set my clouds layer to detail 1, X to 3, and y to 10 (white layer works fine cuz clouds is always gray anyway) I used the Super Chrome curve and then posterized it to get to 2 colors and thenduped the layer and used select by color to color the layers. To get the grain I made some RGB noise (unchecked Independent) used the Filters>Enhance>Unsharp mask with a radius of 50 and an amount of 1 then darkened it by adjusting the curve, then set the layer Mode to Grain Merge. Pretty easy plywood texture. Don't know if I got the colors right or not.

Looks pretty cool to me Drac. Maybe a Woodwurx series...?

Cheers Lyle, I'll have a look at that.

Well, Erisian, it looks like we only rediscovered something someone else did a long time ago.

Lyle you could have waited at least an hour so we could enjoy the discovery euphoria for a few more minutes. :cry

The more you get into the cogs w.r.t. GIMP, the more you will know that the Registry is your friend. I remembered this cool Script-fu from last year (didn't have to tax my half-heimerz too much). lol

Bet you it can be done in G'MIC too, but I'm a user and not a programmer, so I leave that challenge to the G'MIC gurus. :)

It does look pretty good.
IWARP makes a mean knot for wood also. :)

Nice tutorial Erisian. Your finished product looks like Cherry, or close to it. KUDO's

Thank you Molly. Cherry is my favourite wood colour, that's why I used it. :)

How exactly do you guys get knots using IWarp? I tried different things but couldn't get decent results.

That looks pretty great with that frame Alc. That's pretty much what I come up with as far as knots. I've tried Grow and Swirl with different settings. I just can't get it to come out right. Maybe it's just a matter of perserverance

Nice work Alc. Bug - Try Iwarp swirl on a desaturated plasma layer in overlay mode. http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4710

Your dresser looks awesome Erisian. I'm just looking for more varied and natural looking knots. I can make some decent looking wood with just grain. I figured out how to prevent what happened to the right.

I don't know how this guy became a gold member but it wasn't for tutorials like this. There is some vulgarity in the comments if you're easily shocked.
