Rather just use Mehdi's Find threshold filter or G'MIC's B/W Stamp Erisian. Sometimes I feed a result into Potrace and port the vector result back into GIMP. :)

It doesn't really matter. Depends what you want to do with it. I selected black and flood-filled black.
