This is Espers Translation of a badly worded tutorial

the german tut is a pretty overcomplicated, badly structured tutorial and i must apologize for posting it

here is a translation of the german text - i hope i made no mistake

1. white BG 400x100px, black text, merge down
2. duplicate three times and make them all invisible, except the one on the top
3. Gaussian Blur top layer by 7, invert, duplicate and then turn off
4. create a new black layer on top, apply RGB Noise 0,6
5. set the mode to 'Burn' and merge down
6. apply Sparkle filter to the merged down layer:
Luminosity: 0,06
Flare Intensity: 0,4
Spike Length: 40
Spike Points: 6
Spike Angle: 15
colorize the rays by changing the gamma value (layers/color/value):
red:1
green: 3
blue: 4
Note by translator: it appears this can be done with colourise on default values
duplicate and turn off the top layer
7. set the lower layer to 'Addition', activate the top layer of the duplicated original layer (thats copy#1), invert and turn the eye on
8. merge down both visible layers and apply Threshold 140/255, then invert and duplicate
9. offset the lower of the duplicated layers by 5 right and 3 down, Gaussian Blur by 5, set the mode of the top layer to 'Burn', merge down and then turn off the eye
10. now we use another of the duplicated original layers, invert, offset by 4/2 and Gaussian Blur by 5. the last duplicated original layer is made visible, set to 'Burn'
11. we combine the result with the Ice layer by using it as a layermask
12. [description of the layermask effect]
13. turn on the shadow layer and set the mode to 'Addition'

as far as i understand the ice effect is more or less complete in step 6, when you Colourize and the rest is just the shadow and the text effect

Molly here is where you will find the levels and threshold filters

This is an image of the levels filter

This is how to apply the threshold filter

I hope this is of help to you :hi5

Thank you Greachan. nice job you did on that.

I will try it one more time, it is the layers I am having the probs with now. Like not know which one I should be on cuz they are not named.

molly, the tutorial flow is completely annoying
loads of layers duplicated for no apparent reason..
you never quite know what you are actually working on at the moment (is it the ice, the shadow or the text effect ?) until you are finished and the constant setting modes to this and then merging and then duplicating....
its waaaaay to complicated :hoh
when really, the ice effect is quite simple

you need blurred text and noise and then apply the sparkle filter, thats all

im reposting my experiment fom the Lightning Weave thread, so its all in one place

Image
merge black text with white BG, Blur by 2, RGB Noise max, invert text selection, fill with black, apply Sparkle filter:
Luminosity: 0,06
Flare Intensity: 0,4
Spike Length: 20
Spike Points: 16
Spike Angle: -1
Spike Density: 0,12
Preserve Luminosity

i actually gave up on the frozen text - i didn't have any problems following the german tutorial (though it was very badly structured, with far too much unnecessary info, like esper says), but it took too much experimenting before i got the spikes like i wanted them and it felt a bit pointless when i realized i could get the exact same result using on e of the alpha-to-logo filters :(. too bad, i really wanted to learn a new way to make winter.

in this version i tried to add layer names and some changes in brackets

1. white BG 400x100px, black text, merge down (fontsize 100px)
2. duplicate three times and make them all invisible, except the one on the top (set name to'blur')
3. Gaussian Blur top ('blur') layer by 10, invert, duplicate(called ice) and then turn off visibility on blur layer
4. create a new black layer on top of the (ice), apply RGB Noise 0,6
5. set the mode to 'Burn' and merge down (with ice layer and name the merged layer 'ice')
6. apply Sparkle filter to the merged down ('ice') layer:
Luminosity: 0,06
Flare Intensity: 0,4
Spike Length: 40(20)
Spike Points: 6
Spike Angle: 15
(Spike Density: .5)
colorize the rays by changing the gamma value (layers/color/value):
red:1
green: 3
blue: 4(6)
duplicate(call ice copy) and turn off (ice copy) layer
7. set the lower layer(the original 'ice' layer) to 'Addition', activate the top layer of the duplicated original layer (thats copy#1), invert and turn the eye on
8. merge down both visible layers and apply Threshold 140/255, then invert (no need to duplicate, just do color to alpha then alpha-to-selection then selection-invert and clear the ice-copy and blur layers,go to my final step 9
9. color to alpha then alpha-to-selection on the last copy layer and clear the ice-copy layer, selection-none, then apply a drop-shadow on the ice-copy layer, with all your layers visible, merge visible layers thats all
Image

If you get lost along the way let me know and I will assist all i can

Esper I think they went through all the additional steps to create layer masks and shadows when now it's done quicker with selections and drop shadow

Graechan, in step #7, you say set lower layer to addition...Which lower layer are you referring to?

Okay Esper, I will take another look. Never have I been so confused in my life. I like all the layers to be named and that makes it so much easier. Anyway, thanks I will look at the original

Thank you Graechan to try this tutorial to be easier. Surely I'm not at your level but I'm lost almost at the beginning steps.
(duplicate three times (that is 4layers?)
create a new black layer... apply RGB Noise ( I apply it ) but I can't see anything.
after following steps I don't get any rays, so >I can't give any colour.
I know it is ask too much but if someone can do this tutorial, and get some screen capture, would be a great help to understand the tut. :tyspin

Anyway I can get lost easily, sorry.

Issabella,
one little thing (for now)
when applying RGB noise you have to click on "independent RGB", and NOT ON CORRELATED NOISE, otherwise you see nothing
