I tried it on a photo of a couple, and the background looks very much like a colored pencil drawing, but the faces still looked too much like a photograph. I will need to find a photo with better lighting.

Thanks all for your comments, and also for the images with the effect or new ideas, that is great. I would like to see more. I have updated the post with a video by the way.

Followed basic tutorial with this and it came out looking a lot like a pencil drawing. I wonder if this might not also be useful in some way in my actual digital drawings. Definitely a nice way to add some texture.

Fiddled with different layer modes and came up with one that finally looked less like a photo than most of my tries.

My result. I have confirmed that the technique is not very good for picture containing long horizontal and vertical lines. (or maybe it is suitable for house picture like this? idk )

I really like to see new images applying the effect. I think we can learn a lot about texturing our pictures doing these kind of experiments. And i agree with @hanciong good results, but long lines always produce this effect. maybe we have to retouch a bit the image before apply the effect, painting some little perpendicular lines where we get the "lines " effect. This way we broke the tangential prolongation? i have to test it.

cute Cat!. The second one looks a bit carved in wood. Now i am interesting to mimic pastels over Black sheet of paper. challenge for 2013?
And sure this is even better for digital painting. I have made a lot of tests with my own paintings before using it for photos. :D

Bonjour,

This is a test to create a filter.
The result would be similar to the right side of the image.
The original drawing is in the center.
The effect of G'MIC is left of the image.

(The result could also be a mixture of the right and left)

Is this project interesting?
