today i recreated an old cover from 1997 and because he4rty asked me a related question about blurring and sharpening, i decided to make it into a tutorial
http://s.pixogs.com/image/R-7094-1289824524.jpeg

1. create your canvas, i used 600x450px and applied a gradient
2. type your text - i used Arial Bold 119, Spacing -7
3. align (center) your text

Image

4. apply Gaussian Blur: i used 18

Image

5. now comes the tricky part: go to 'Colours' open 'Curves', and set the channel to alpha (this is essential !)

Image

6. drag the curves into an angular shaped S-curve
what you want is not jaggy looking edges, but not too blurry too
so find the sweet spot, by experimenting a bit
and when you're happy, hit OK

Image

and thats it, a quick way of making weird text

and a variation with a "shadow" made with 'Motion Blur' - Angle: 17

Nice results Esper, it reminds me of either Ice melting or hot molten metal.

esper: i used to do this a lot before, i love the irregularities you get when you blur a lot and then use a curve on it. looks nice with the motion blur too, that's definitely something to play around with when i find the time.

i had an old xcf from a header i made when i kept a blog and where i have used almost this method - not as elegantly, because i didn't know how to use curves on an alpha channel, so my text was black on white first, then blurred, sharpened with value curve and cut out from background, but still it's practically the same thing, you get the same nice little distortions in the text. i used that old xcf, added some radial motion blur and an outer glow to follow the text. looks cool, now i just wish i hadn't cut the background in that shape or that i at least knew where i have the background pattern saved so i could make a new one.

O: that looks great, love the background! this sure is fun to play with.
graechan: :jumpclap nice job, looks good with some volume on the text! the glow-in-the-dark green one is my favourite.
esper: i never thought of it as a peacock but maybe that's what it is. i made the pattern in some sort of pattern maker online long ago.
"blast and confound" is my favourite euphemistic curse, i found it in an old book long ago and added it to my collection at once. it was also the name of my longest running blog effort.

The text is from my text creator (I just added a text modify option)

The text volume comes from iccii I've been working on, and adding to his files files

The background comes from Beautify another of my favorite plugins

No reason not to throw in a bit of mathmap

Very nice Graechan...Did you stroke your outside line with a selection or path? Just wondering cuz it has a few ragged edges around the outside.

Brilliant idea, Esper!
I wish I had known this technique before making this PS tutorial. Yours is a lot easier and prettier. I'll redo this tut with it. Thanks for sharing!

Molly the jagged edges in around the oval border came from the mathmap filter
