I like text effects very much!
Today i found out how to get a funny 3D wood text-effect.
You need no extra texture or a special script.
Did you know that motion blur can produce a 3d-effect? Read the tutorial now! ;)
All you need is GIMP 2.8 out of the box!
Please show me your results, i want to see them! :)

You can create this text style then:

i had some problems locating the direction of the light, so maybe my dropshadow is wrong

I am in the process of doing this tute but I do get very confused with bump maps. For example when I am bumping the layer solid noise, I click on that layer, then what bump map do I use for that layer? In this tute it shows 3dwood.xcf 1/Eberne 12...which one is that

Molly: please ignore the name of the bumpmap-layers in the screenshots.
Thats old names from my original document. I was testing some blur.

You should have the original text, three blur-layers and the solid noise-layer.
Use two (gaussian/motion) of the blur and the other from the solid noise layer only for that original text.
First, the gaussian for make the text round and .
Second, the solid noise (not too much) for the texture.
Third, the motion blur for the 3D effect.
Thats all! :)

Esper: Yes i really like your outcome! I happy to show something new for someone! :)

chris f: this definitely looks fun - the result looks a bit like cartoon wood, i like that. will have to download the pdf and give it a try!
esper: that looks good, nice lighting - but i'm not sure i think that wood looks very rustic, it looks highly polished and rather industrial to me :).

molly, there are several ways to make your bump map layer noticable

one is to name the layer in a way you will easily be able to distinguish
for instance i call my BumpMaps something like BumpMapPPPPPPPPP

also there is a number in the Layer Attributes window, that you can write down and easily find in the BumpMap dropdown menu

Thank you Esper, you are a doll. I will start again when my Young and Restless is over.

Edit: I don't know where you get Layer attributes. You must be still using Gimp-2.6. I can't see it anywhere in 2.8.2

fun tutorial, and easy to follow once i had named my bump layers properly :). i was stupid enough to try it on a text curved after a path and the result was of course that the 3d effect didn't come out as it should have. i figured that out when i was motion blurring, but i wanted to see what it would look like anyway. rather nice, i think - but the only world where it would work is the cartoon world, 3d effects there don't have to be realistic...

Chris F great tutorial, thank you

Molly for layer attributes 'right click' on the layer and it's at the top of the drop down menu list in 2.6 and 2.8

AnMal I think it looks very realistc

graechan: thank you :). that font you used worked so well with this effect - looks cheerful and cartooney!

molly: oh heavens, you got through this without the aid of layer attributes. i suppose three different bump layers shouldn't be such a big deal, but they got my head spinning:). nice job, anyway!

My problem was and is I know the difference of the layers to put in the bump map cuz I have them all named, gaussian, motion, etc. but I never remember what layer I should have selected when I do this. If I have motion selected in the bump map, which layer should I have selected in my layer dialogue.

Graechan, you know I always have to be different. I knew I didn't have it since 2.8 first came out because I noticed it when I wanted to rename one of my layers and it wasn't there. :teeth

Nope, it doesn't work. I have been all through the preferences and all the drop downs and no dice. I even tried Google.

well AnMal, i typed the word BEFORE i bumpmapped, right

and 'rustic' was the only word that came to my mind, regarding wood
my english lacks sometimes ;)

you always select the layer you want to be bumpmapped - isnt that obvious ?
i mean you apply an effect, so that it looks more and more like this three-dimensional wood

the bumpmaps are just helpers to get there

instead of making a bumpmap as a layer, you could apply the same filters (gaussian blur and motion blur) to the selected text saved to a channel - then the layers would be out of the way

@Graechan: very nice results and cool font you chose !

more woodwork:
i did this with motion/blurred channels and tried to use the same bumpmap values regarding angle and azimuth, the clouds were the usual layer
