In this tutorial i will show you how to make a brushed aluminium texteffect with layerfx.
You will need the layerfx script by Jon Stipe. I recommend the python version, because it has a preview.
https://www.gimpscripts.net/2020/09/new ... x-210.html

This will NOT look the same when done with other Layer Effects scripts, like iccii or Graechan's iccii update !
You have been warned.

Image

01. Start with a canvas 800x360px #4e4e4e

02. type your base text, i used the font 'Simplified Arabic Bold' 250px, Spacing -4

03. alpha select your text and save it to a channel for future use

04. create a new transparent layer under your text, name it 'Dropshadow', fill the selection with black, deselect and blur by 10

Image

05. activate your base text layer and run Satin with the following values

Image

06. activate your base text layer again and run Bevel & Emboss with the following values

Image

For a brushed metal texture:
07. create a new layer on top of all #cccccc, name it Texture
08. apply RGB-Noise 0,2 on all channels
09. apply Linear Motion Blur → Length:25, Angle:145
this is a technique Draconian shows in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3750
09. apply a layermask from channel, to get rid of everything thats outside the textboundaries
10. set the mode to 'Burn' (or 'Multiply')

Image

11. apply Levels

Image

12. apply Contrast

Image

13. you can also run Map -> Displace on the texture by using a copy of the saved channel, blurring by 12 and using it as the displacement map, but the effect is very subtle

Image

14. add some Noise to the background (0,02) to make it look less clean

15. add a highlight to the background if you like
i used a radial gradient from white to transparent, dragged from the middle to the bottom, on a new transparent layer
Opacity 23% Mode: Screen
added RGB-Noise: 0,6

16. and you are done !

Version with Displace

Super Molly! :hi5
That tutorial give so many results differents, just change one layer mode or another set. And all with beautiful visuals!
I could not get the same result of the tutorial, but I liked what one can get with it!
:tyspin Thank you Molly! :tyspin :bigthup

As you wish Master!

After finishing, I played with the layers.
I ended up closing the eyes (making it invisible) layer of satin and highlight.
In Dropshadow changed the layer mode to Grain merge.
I also used another font (or need not have said that huh?)
One question I had was if the original font color should be black or white.

Well I ended up with this result

Thx Esper!

hmmm, this is the nice shiny effect you get from the satin
i posted something similar in the Arabian Nights tutorial

i think you used HSV Noise instead of RGB, thats why your noise is all colorful

the text is in the same color as the background, thats why only the shadow makes it visible, as you can see here:

akros: looks good even if it turned out completely different from the brushed aluminium. did something go wrong with the layers you turned off or did you just not like them?
mine started out as aluminium, but the surface reminded me so much of the semi-polished titanium i like using for anodized jewellery, so of course i had to "anodize" it to one of my standard colours :). i wanted to make a velvet background, but acceptable velvet texture is hard to make and i'm rather fussy about fabric so i gave it up.

Well...
Apparently the source was to be color #4e4e4e, but I used white. :gaah
As my result was even different than expected, at the end, I decided to play with optional results. :paint
AnMal beautiful result! Actually the source was very good in that assembly, excellent choice! :jumpclap :clap :coolthup

Edited:
"create a new transparent layer under your text,"
I translated wrong. Traded under for above, and did this on the text layer. :troll
I'll redo. :scram

:yes :yes :hi5
AnMal, now was rapid! All settings were already set.

In RGB Noise, not marked "Independent RGB". Before the Esper noted the excess of color, but not used "HSV Noise", just set up wrong.
Esper in bevel and emboss, in "Shadows-Surface Contour", not reported in the tutorial, so I left "Linear"

Image

Thx guys

What is the name of the font ?

Seriously? I confess that I look and do not see .... I see only the "surface to contour to Bevel and Gloss. But not to Shadows.
But ok.

The font is: ethnocentric

Drac said hes taking some time off

Graechan, i like your result, especially the reddish tint, but i think the iccii bevel is not doing the whole piece a favor
