i thought this was fun enough to write a tutorial on! i played with some text and thought i'd try the pixelise filter on it and then i ended up with something that reminded me so much of sci-fi from the eighties or nineties. i called it the retro sci-fi effect but that's only because i don't really know how to describe it. it's simple to make and takes very little time, and of course it can be used for paisleys and stuff and not just text - so i hope at least someone will give it a try!

edit: oops, forgot to attach the pdf! coming right up, don't go anywhere!
edit number 2: oops again! i seem to have posted the first version of the pdf, with some mistakes in it. if someone downloaded i apologize, this time i will upload the correct version!

In fact, it doesn't sound Retro Sci-Fi that much to me, I immediately thought 'disco' when I saw it, which 80's/90's sci-fi shows or movies are you thinking of ?

anarkhya: to be honest, i don't know :). and it's not movie posters or opening titles for series that i'm thinking of, it's more the way futuristic technology was portrayed in the movies and series i saw back then - with pixellated pictures that seemed to shine. but i guess disco is a better association, more people will recognize it.

May try this tut myself later AnMal and thanks for sharing. Don't remember how I created this seamless texture (a few weeks back) but your image reminded me of my concoction Chris (I know; SSP). :)

chris f: well, it was inspired by a thread where we all ended up making glass blocks :). i refer to the thread in the tutorial, but here's the link anyway: http://www.gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3515&hilit=accidental+rodilius
lylejk: looks a lot like your contributions in the accidental pattern thread - and you're actually credited in the tutorial :).
O: thanks for trying it out - fun, isn't it :)? i like the way your text is layed out, makes good use of the light rays!
