Thanks guys!

Esper...you are right. I thought the same while i`m posting this. This forum is great for texeffect and those threads.
I will write more, cause it should be a tutorial series, but i will also wait a bit. ;)

PS: Are you on Deviantart? I saw a link in any thread, but i do not find it.

I must be missing something but is there an easy way to find specifically all the text effects tutorials? I think before I go writing gmic text filters I should at least try out a good few tutorials manually! I think I'll make this one my first effort :jumpclap

Chris F: Thanks for this tutorial. I almost stopped before applying the solid noise, because it already looks a lot like chocolate.

nice work, jas45 and esper! i've managed without chocolate since christmas, but now i have a real craving...

garagecoder: i think most of our text effects are now in chris f:s collection here, and he has other good text effects listed there too.

here's my chocolate:

Nice job Anmal, I am going to have to go check out the bulk chocolate at the Bulk Barn. I think I will get a bunch of Hershey Almond chunks. Then, maybe I will go back on my diet.

Cool that site has loads of stuff, I'll have to try them. I'm not very good at using gimp itself but this tutorial was easy to follow. I strayed a little off the path but here's my attempt:

Think I've gone and cropped the shadow too much, oh well :oops:

@AnMal: great melting chocolate effect
one thing i noticed and i noticed that in a lot of 3D-ish texteffects, is that the perspective is kind of weird
on the one hand, it looks like you look at the chocolate from the front and the text is tilted 45° backwards
but at the same time, the drips are going down vertically....

@garagecoder:
great result, although it does look more like an exotic animalskin than chocolate
or at least the chocolate we have in germany ;)

hahah yes to be honest I don't think I'd be eating that any time soon :hehe
I was just glad to be able to follow the steps, maybe when I try more from Chris F site I'll be a bit more correct. I'm really a beginner when it comes to gimp!

as i said, i think you did great

it wasnt meant as criticism
in fact i think experimentation and accidents are great opportunity to find new ways of doing stuff

without my poor result of trying the gel text, xgeous would have never showed us how its done
and im extremely happy he did

esper: the chocolatier made his text on a plain glass pane, then lifted the glass pane to ninety degrees to better admire his work - but alas, it wasn't yet dry and the text started to drip down. he then quickly tilted the glass pane backwards to stop the dripping. the assistant sneaked up behind the chocolatier's back with his smartphone and quickly took a snapshot of his master's mistake just as the pane was at 45 degrees.
or: the font is actually slanting a little to the left, that's why this particular text just like many other texts with fancy effects put on them may be read as tilting backwards.
also: 3d effects often tend to look a bit weird with respect to proportion and perspective, that's one of the reasons i'm not such a big fan of them.
