This tutorial is based on the video that xgeous made for us to show how he makes his transparent text.
(see this thread for more details: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6607)

I modified his technique a bit and will show you a variation at the end, on how to get a different gloss.

01. Create a new file 600 x400px #2080c5 as your background

02. create a new transparent layer on top of your BG but make it 1000x1000px

Image

Image

03. zoom out
fill this layer with a Grid (Filters - Render - Pattern - Grid)

Image

04. rotate the layer by 45°,

Image

05. then move it so it overlaps your BG perfectly
'Layer to image size' and turn down Opacity to about 30%

Image

06. for a Vignette Effect, create a new transparent layer
make an elliptical selection, invert and fill with black

Image

07. blur by 200
change mode to 'Multiply' and turn down Opacity to 60%

Image

08. type your text in a 50 grey - i used the font 'Valken Thin' 156px
center with the 'Align Tool'
'Layer to imagesize'

09. alpha select the text and save it to a channel

10. for a bumpmap duplicate the saved channel
Gaussian Blur the channel by 3
(the mask is green because i changed the color for this tutorial so you guys can better see it)

Image

11. activate the grey text and apply a bumpmap with the blurred channel as the map:

Image

12. apply 'Color to alpha' with the 50 grey so that you are only left with the white highlights

Image

13. on a new transparent layer stroke selection by 6 with black
then Deselect
blur the stroke by 20

Image

14. alpha select text again
Invert
cut blurred stroke and we have an Inner Shadow

15. invert selection again
apply Dropshadow with default values but lower Opacity to 88%

Image

16. select from saved channel
save selection to a path
stroke path by 1 with black on a new transparent layer

Image

change the Mode to 'Grain Merge' and reduce the Opacity to 15%

Image

17. create new transparent layer on top of text layer
fill selection with pattern
add white layermask

Image

18. stroke on the layermask a gradient from black to white, to make the pattern partly translucent.

Put the pattern-filled layer under the stroke layer.

Image

This is your transparent texteffect based on xgeous' technique.

Thanks again xgeous - great effect !

Now i will show you the Esper technique of how to modify the gloss.

19. apply an alpha-curve to the highlight like this:

Image

20. then duplicate this layer twice and move your three linked gloss layers 1px down and 1 px to the right
your result will look like this:

For yet another variation we will delete the pattern-filled layer and duplicate the Grid-filled layer.
On Grid-filled layer one, we apply a layermask 'Channel' and 'Invert mask'.
This will make the grid inside the text invisivble.

On the second Grid-filled layer on top of the first, we will apply a layermask 'Channel', so everything outside the text is invisible.

Next we duplicate our saved channel and blur it by 20.
Activate the upper Grid-filled layer (with the grid inside the text) and apply 'Displace' on it, with the blurred 20 channel as the map.
I used a value of 100.

Image

That effect will look look this:

Nice results; I still like Inkscape's Refractive Gel A preset for similar effect. Displacement map afterwards for the lensing effects. :)

Awesome, Esper. I plan to try your tutorial. I made a pdf document of it and attached it below. Since the images were very large, I made the pdf document landscape style so the images didn't get too scrunched or cut off.

Wow Esper, that's a well written tutorial. :clap :clap and I have to say it, I learn at least two things from this tutorial, like using the channel for our bumpmap, use paths to get strokes, I never thought about that. Thanks Esper!!!! :tyspin

esper: nice tweaks, that's a very neat way to get the displacement on the text.

That was an awsome tutorial. I learned a lot from doing it.

My font didn't look very good with the displacement (sort of like degausing an old TV), so I ended up turning off the visibility on that layer. I think your font looks better - a little 'rounder'.

Thanks. :clap

glad you like it, xgeous :)
i converted another one of your videos into a tutorial - will post that later

thanks Oregonian for the pdf !

Jas45, i think you did great and i think your font has a lot of potential to make the whole text look like rods of glass, i was thinking about how make this effect even better, and maybe one could shrink the selection a bit, fill with grey and then run the bumpmap on it, so that the highlights will be a bit more inside the text, to make it look more 3D

also you could offset the Inner Shadow a bit

lylejk, looks great, doesnt it
im wondering if we should rename the tutorial into plexiglass text....

kungfu07 and AnMal: im looking forward to what you'll post
i can almost smell glass paisleys coming :D

i played with my xcf file a bit and this came out

I don't know about anyone else, but when I got done with the tutorial without variations, I had 11 layers.

Step 13. It says to stroke the selection by 6. The 50 gray was the foreground color. It didn't look right so I used black.

Anyway, I'm not overly please with my results.

Oregonian, stroking with black was correct, i added it to the tutorial text

also one of the strokes makes an Inner Shadow, thats the one stroked by 6 and blurred by 20
the other one is supposed to be a subtle outline and only stroked by 1
yours looks thicker

the stripes are supposed to be part of the background, it looks like you have them on top of everything
i think everything will look much better when you put them to the botttom

my layers look like this

Image

btw, i like your result
if you cut the stripes from the background, and leave them inside the textboundaries, it would look like something from a comic

if you are confused by the double used term 'Stroke'
-> understand that the 'stroked:6px-GaussianBlurred:20' "Stroke" is really an 'Inner Shadow' in PS LayerStyle language

you will get the same Inner Shadow if you do it like this:

01. Alpha select your text -> Shrink by 3
(i turned on the channel mask and made it green so you guys can better see the shrink)
Image

02. Invert Selection
03. Fill with black

Image

04. Deselect
05. Gaussian Blur by 20

Image

06. Alpha select your text again
07. Invert Selection
08. Cut
09. put it under your Highlights Layer

Image

haha AnMal, thats what i called the picture, but couldnt remember the english word, so i just named it rubber instead :D

i did this with the font 'Alba' 206px

the bumpmap is the selection shrinked by 5 saved to a channel and then blurred by 8
thats why the highlights are more inside the text

duplicated them twice and compressed two of them with alpha-curves, so that you get a fuzzy highlight and one sharp

I liked the effect AnMal got with the "paisley-drops", and I also liked Espers revised text with the highlights more inside.

I don't know what I call this... maybe "bent wire"?
