Ahh, the good 'ol c2g overlay! :)

It's funny I was just fiddling with it this morning myself on my Mr. Presidents image (decided against it in the end).

It's amazing what that overlay will sometimes do to an image. Great results! :) (And the photo you applied it to doesn't hurt the eyes at all... ;) )

Oh, and I believe G'MIC has a local contrast filter that will produce similar results for you (possibly faster). Might be something to check out as well.
