This tutorial was written by Ali Imram at Gimp Talk. The original tutorial can be found here.

Create a 3D Bowl in GIMP
Image

  1. Start with a new, square (Width = Height) image filled with white. It can be any size you want. Mine is 600 x 600px.

  2. Make a new transparent layer. Set the Rectangle Select Tool :rectsel Options to be half the Width and the whole height of your image.
    View > Check Snap to Canvas Edges.

  3. Since my image is 600 x 600px, the Rectangle Select tool is set at 300 x 600px. Select the right side of your image with the Rectangle Select Tool and gently move it to the edges of your image until it is snug against the top, bottom and right side of your image.
    Image

  4. Uncheck Fixed in your Rectangle Select tool Options.

  5. Select > To path. That is insurance against losing your selection.

  6. Fill your selection with a pattern, gradient, solid color or whatever else you would like. My pattern is named burlwood.
    Image

  7. Select > None
  8. Filters > Map > Map Object.

  9. In the Options tab:
    Map to: Sphere
    Check Transparent Background
    Image

  10. Click the Orientation tab and Under Rotation:
    X = -90.0
    Y = 0.0
    Z = 30.0
    Image

  11. Click OK. Your bowl is finished.

  12. Make this low, wide bowl by starting with a square image and filled with a pattern, gradient or color of your choice.
    Image

  13. Image > Canvas Size > Make sure the chain is broken. Double only the width of your image, press the Enter key to set the size. Drag the image to the right with your mouse, click the Resize layers button and choose All layers.
    Image

  14. Do the tutorial with your re-sized image starting with Step 8.

Cool Oregonian. I did this one, thanks to your well set out directions. Or maybe I am a little more alert atm.
I don't have the tools option box for rectangle select though.

Thought I would do a 'snack/dry food' bowl

Yes alc has the most original ideas of anyone I know. He has a great imagination.
Thank you 0 for reviving the tute. very easy and yet productive. This bowl is made from Fence Post's denim.

Very nice, sallyanne. Do you have options for any of the tools? If not, you need to get some.

@ alc, very clever. How did you get the text to be straight on it?

Sorry Oregonian actually I do. Expected it to be a pop up though. I don't normally use options for the rectangle select. Yes I have options for other tools. I am still getting used to the new set up and forget to click on the tool options icon on the top right.

Sallyanne, you need to dock your Tool Options onto your Toolbox. It will make part of your Gimp life better.

Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options (top choice)

Drag the little window from the place where the * is and drop it onto your Toolbox where it says:
You can drop dockable dialogs here.
Image

The color will change on the bottom of the toolbox when it's time to drop.
Image

Now, with each tool you use, its options will be down at the bottom of the Toolbox.

Can't. It doesn't say tool options at the top. I have tried doing it from the icon and the box as well and it will not move.

In gimp, did you go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options and click Tool Options? You should get the little Tool Options window.

Finally moved it. It was already docked on the right side with a few other things so the box would not open up in a separate window. All fixed now anyhow;) Thanks for your patience.

Unfortunately, the link isn't "live" in your image.

Here is a link that will get you to the episode where you can download it.
http://blog.meetthegimp.org/episode-105 ... l-of-soup/

Thanks for the info. The episode is downloading as I write this.
