Here's my attempt at the 'Tronic Layering' tut, what do you think?...

awesome Wallace, i just love when people come up with variations of my tutorials - the purple works great !
the background is great too !

you may want to tweak the bevel-highlight a bit - i think they could be improved

thanks Graechan, thats a very nice compliment !

i must say without Erisian and his Innards experiments, i would have never discovered the possibilites of the Relief Light filter
also a big thank you to Rononours for writing that filter !

esper: i must have been over at gsl right after you posted those, because i have worked on the "illuminations effect" off and on for two days now - without a single tolerable result :(. i can't get the relief light highlights in the right spots on the text, they always end up in the middle where the text is darkest, which makes no sense at all. i'm not giving up, though, soon enough i'll have this effect beaten and then i can leave my usual message at gsl again.
wallace: :wow that's just brilliant! the background and text effect go so well together.

that sounds frustrating and odd at the same time, because i have no idea what is going wrong

i just apply 'New from Visible' and then open the 'Relief Light' filter with that layer activated

i set the 'Image Smoothness' first (~0.3 seems to be the value that works for me) and it instantly gets the plastic look treatment all over
i turn up the 'Specular Size' to the max and leave the x, y and z sliders as they are
then i go for 'Specular lightness', 'Ambient lightness' and 'Darkness (in that order) for contrast

esper: it is frustrating. i usually do just what you say, but i've tried moving the x, y and z sliders about too and it doesn't make any difference, really. i have been trying on different fonts too but that makes no difference either, no matter what font i choose i get the highlights in the darkest spots of the text. i will beat this one, though! i'm not gonna let some g'mic filter get the better of me :).

I went all out on the 'Illuminations tutorial'. :cofscreen
This is also a super cool tut. :bigthup
Not one issue came up while doing it, it was nearly a cake-walk.

Thanks Esper, when working with the 'Tronic Layering' tut, I did all the beveling and shadows in reverse, along with a few other things that I can't remember. :hehe
I probably could have given the bevel/highlight a little more of a tweaking.
Great tut Esper!

Well I got all of like 16 followers so I don't know how impactful it will be to promote. Mainly I have that tumblr so when people ask me what I do with my time I can point to it and say, this.

wallace and ek22: great results from both of you! i always like your backgrounds, wallace, and your neatness and exactness, ek22.

i finally got a result with this! i just couldn't get anything useful out of the relief light filter and i felt like an idiot because everyone else seemed to work this with ease. well, today when i got home i thought it was time to upgrade to the latest version of g'mic to try the box fitting filter - and after upgrading i had no problem whatsoever with the relief light filter! it was like magic and i have no idea what happened. well, whatever happened i can now make jelly text!
