1. Print Screen keyboard key (entire screen) and Alt + Print Screen key (active window) capture to clipboard.
2. File | Create | Screen Shot... (Shift + F12)
3. File | Snapshot (visible layers only)

[Tip] Create keyboard shortcut, Shift + Alt + F12 for Snapshot.
1. Edit | Keyboard Shortcuts, search for Snapshot.
2. Highlight Snapshot, type Shift + Alt + F12.
3. Release keys, check Save keyboard shortcuts on exit.

Excellent information, Odin. Thank you. I never noticed the Screen Shot selection in the File menu. Thanks also for saulgoode's script. :bigthup

With the, 'File>Create>Screen Shot' method... I think the 'Grab a single window' option is pretty cool.
It's also pretty cool that the screenshots open in Gimp as well.

Thanks, Odin! In addition to that you can take a screenshot of the entire webpage (Create-> From webpage).
Very useful plugin to download long tutorials as one image rather than a series of screenshots.
They finally fixed that in Windows version! :yes It didn't work in Win versions of GIMP 2.8.2-2.8.4

Yes the Gimp Screen shot tool is excellent and the cool thing about saulgoode's script is, once you have the keyboard shortcut set up, everything happens in the background with no distraction from your workflow.

Nice Odin. thanks
I didn't know saulgoode had a snapshot script. I downloaded it and I went to File > Snapshot but no dialogue comes up on how to use it. Has anyone tried it?

There is a pretty good description at saulgoode's site.

The basics, only the state of the image on the canvas is saved.
saulgoode wrote:
This script will save a snapshot of the current state of the image as a PNG file. Just the visible projection is saved, not the image itself.

The PNG file has a timestamp appended to its name and is saved in the same directory whence the original image came. For example, the file "/home/saul/Images/test.jpg" will have a snapshot such as "/home/saul/Images/test-29743.png". The time stamp is derived from the number of seconds since 1970, but rolls over every 24 hours.

If the original image has not yet been saved to a file then the snapshot will be placed in the GIMP startup directory with the basename of "Untitled" (e.g., "/home/saul/Untitled-29856.png").

There are some cool mini animation possibilities!

Snapshot is brilliant but I'd like to save the file in a location of my choice and not my bin folder

I agree, I like all of saulgoodes scripts so maybe he might change the location if we ask him.

When you save the image your working on first, the snapshot should be saved to the same directory as your image (imagename-timestamp).

Saulgoode loves animations and this script is great for quick animations just save your original image to a desktop folder and as you make progressive small changes snapshot it

Image

If the default for non saved images could be changed to the desktop, it would be better

Molly there is a 4th way to save Images called 'Export to Directory'
Image
this has a simple setup section at the beginning

(define default-name
"Graechan" ;----------------------------------->set default name here
)
;
(define default-dir
"C:/Users/user/Desktop/Posted to GimpChat" ;--->set default path here
)
;
(define default-xcf-dir
"C:/Users/user/Desktop/In progress" ;---------->set default xcf path here
)
;<----------->Do not edit below this line---------------------------------------->

Would I have to put all that code in to get that dialogue? I would screw up for sure, but maybe not, if the lines are numbered.

I think Saulgoode mentioned that he would fix it or change it to do that.

The dialogue to be amended is at the top of the script that's not posted yet, and is simple to amend
It's the same as call out to set up, here you just set the paths to 2 folders on your desk top

I have to try this script some time...

Personally, for my tutorials, I use GreenShot. It is OpenSource and available for several platforms.
You can take automatic screenshots or load the images in the GreenShot Editor where you can add annotation, speech bubbles, Text, Numbering etc. to it.

Have to recommend this!
