stumbled across a PS tutorial and then played around a bit with the idea

its not good enough to be realistic but i like it for its abstract look

I think it's really cool looking. I feel that it would look better without the white haze surrounding it. It's still cool though.

esper: yep, this is any good :). my first thought was: "wow, this is cool!" my second thought was the same as wallaces - no haze or a more transparent haze might have been better. my third thought was: would the text benefit from a tiny wee bit more contrast?

I think it has potential but, I assuming you ran a curve for the chrome effect, this appears to have caused some of the layers to merge.

On the whole nice concept

thanks for all your appreciation !

i added the haze/outer glow to mask jagged edges

the merge layers are a result of the anisotropic smoothing....

this is all not really optimal, but i dont know if it could be improved

here is how it works

01. type your text
02. go to Filters -> Render -> Pattern -> Grid so that you get horizontal lines
03. alpha select the grid and delete it from the text
Image

04.i ran a bilinear gradient over it
Image

05. and then a small bevel (i tweaked the indidual shadows and highlight some more with an alpha-curve)
Image
Image

06. next the extrusion
thats basically a trick i saw in a tutur4u video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfeIBK1k_PY)

decide where you want your vanishing point to be with two guides
mine is at 390/149

then run Motion Blur with these values
Image
Image

07. then duplicate the motion blur until your are happy with the look or try levels with the channel set to alpha
Image
Image

08. next new from visible without the background then chrome curve
Image

09. finally anisotropic smoothing (Amplitude: 100, Iterations: 2, Sharpness: 0,7, Anisotropy: max)
Image

the original tutorial is here:

This version has come out looking alot better and doesn't appear to have that merging between the layers.

It looks a bit blurry, but still cool! :>
I think it's a blurred haze, maybe if you mad it pure white or pure black it would look better.

im still not satisfied with the technique but one can use the motion blur as guides for making selections and filling them with colour

I'd just point out that you can render your grid directly onto the Quickmask; then when you exit Quickmask mode, your grid will be selected (and there is no need to delete an extraneous layer).
01. type your text
02a. Toggle Quickmask
02b. Filters -> Render -> Pattern -> Grid so that you get horizontal white lines
02c. Toggle Quickmask
03. Edit->Clear

Please tell me you are planning a tutorial for this effect also. :)

Nice effect Esper!

@conbagui very nice interpretation, indeed! The only thing my mind keeps rejecting is text reflection per se it tells my eyes that text should be tilted
around X axis towards an observer and... it is not.

conbagui just picked up what the original PS tutorial shows, K1te

but you are probably very trained now thinking in a Blender mindframe ;)

thanks saulgoode
i tried it, because i couldnt see the advantage at first, but using the quick mask always seems like a neat trick

its somewhat quicker, but i like to drag the grid layer around until it fits nicely with the text
