This is a special request from Lorri, I couldn't add images to a PM to show him/her so I made this simple tutorial.
I hope this helps you!

Note: After getting the fur added you still (depending on your style) need to add shadows as needed but this is an easier way to make varying shades of fur.

1: First you go to the brush dynamics and pick random color:

2: Then pick out your colors you want; Lets say you were going to draw a brown bear, get a darker brown then a chestnut brown. - Make sure it's vast enough to see a difference.

3: Pick out your brush and add color to your image!

Here's the difference between gradient and non gradient:

Edit:
I made this little guy as an example of what can be done once you add shading.
It's not that artistically wonderful but eh..just a basic example.

I hope this is helpful! :D

NIce tip, it really makes a big difference to use a gradient. You could even make a custom gradient with several colors!

Hi Moko

I bet I would have to have a tablet to get fur like that right. Because I can't seem to duplicate the fur effect. Did you do like a few hundred brush strokes to make that fur? Sure wish I could do that.

Here is a short video how i did it:
I use the text only as template and paint over it with the fur brush. ;)
Than the eyes and some hairs over it. Color the fur layers.
I did not show the bumpmapping: new layer from visible and add
gaussian blur 100. Use the blur as bumpmap for the fur layer.

Great tip Moko. Painting with gradients is useful for a number of natural features.

I think I'll try to make my own fur brush because I just re-installed original software on my computer and the last thing I want to do is install a new browser toolbar that installs in seconds but will probably never unistall.

Thanks, peglroni

I hate that! :gaah
Have fun with your brush! I'd suggest to make the brush an animated brush so you can have different fur directions and it's not a static looking texture.

Have fun!
