Lyle introduced us to mediamilitia.com for the freebies. I decided to take a peek at their tutorials and came across a few interesting ones. I decided to try out the Broken text tutorial. There are a few big gaps in this tutorial, which involve applying the spraypaint brushes, so I decided to stray just a little bit.

Tutorial is for Photoshop, but translates well for GIMP. Found here: http://mediamilitia.com/how-to-create-broken-text/

very impressive mav.....

I copied the tute and the abr brushes. Every time I try to use the brush from the tute, GIMP locks up. Do these brushes need to be changed to a different name OR does that brush come with a Gimp ext.?

Also, where do I find raster size in GIMP?

Interesting tutorial mahv.

I didn't download the brush. I made my splats with this font.
http://www.dafont.com/search.php?psize=m&q=rhesus+A

Any resemblance between my image and the actual tutorial is coincidental and not necessarily accidental.

I see now that I should have made the path fall between the second story and the body of the a.

I just made a new doc filled with white
Created a new text layer
Used the rec tool to select a broken part of the top half of text.
Cut and pasted it into its own layer.
Alpha to select both text layers and used the Filters/Light and Shadows/Glossy 3-D filter on them.
Looks kinda cool. :clap
Image

Even better with both text layers invisible.

Molly: In the Gimp, create an empty layer just below the one you want to rasterize and then right click on the new layer and choose “Merge Down”. This will rasterize the layer and merge it.

The abr file with the spray paint brushes is HUGE, it makes my GIMP lock up. I moved it out of my GIMP brushes after I was done using it. Way too big for me.

nice tony ! tasty use of splatterbrushes !

the original PS tut has a dropshadow with a ring-contour

you do that by:

01. alpha select text
02. create a new transparent layer below the textlayer and fill the selection with black
03. deselect
04. gaussian blur (8 for example)
05. call up the curves tool and set the channel to alpha (!)
06. shape the curve like you see in the image below and press 'OK'
