Thanks a lot Rod.
I wonder how to make this work with a tablet.

Thanks so much, Rod. One of those priceless tips that are so nice to get. Works great!

Gerard.
The settings carry over to my tablet mouse. Unless your stylus has a wheel on it, I doubt it would work with that. My tablet is a Wacom Bamboo.

@O,
I have a bamboo PT.
It has touch and pad besides stylus and eraser.
I assume you imitate the mouse wheel with two finger scrolling?
I had a terrible time setting up the tablet in Gentoo Linux.
At the time there was a change from kernel support to a separate program.
On top of that the Xorg software was changed too.
When I finally got it working I had to disable touch because it would cause all kinds of problems.
I think I'll go back to the drawing board and try to make touch behave.

Offtopic: How is your son?

Gerard.

Now that was interesting and helpful. It makes all the big checks I send you every month worth it...... Whoops, you said to keep it secret. Sorry.

I was wondering how to do this, thanks.

One problem though. When zoomed in to say 400%, I used to use the wheel to move the image up and down as I edit it. I can no longer do this. Is there a way to set up the arrow keys to move the image up/down left/right so I don't have to move my layers box out of the way to use the bar on the right and bottom of my window?

I think the space bar is the default key for moving the canvass around.

When you are zoomed in there is a control for panning BOTTOM RIGHT corner of the image window. Left click with the mouse to hold and pan the image in any direction.

Example.

Ah, I never noticed that before. Probably because my layers box was covering it. Thanks.

I prefer using the bracket keys for size [ ]
but because I read this I discovered that Alt+scroll wheel was a way to adjust the opacity of the brush.
I would like a way to use the scroll wheel to adjust brush hardness/softness but havent found how to do that/what the setting is called.

Enter "hardness" in the filter bar at the top and you'll find them.

Thanks, I had already tried
increase hardness and decrease hardness
and also set brush hardness
but none of them work with the scroll up and down or with pressing a key, I was thinking maybe it's not possible in gimp? maybe you have to just change brushes to a soft brush?
Maybe some of the standard (default)brushes that come with gimp are bitmap and not vector so you can't change the hardness?
Edit: yes that was it, I downloaded a basic set of vector brushes and now it works.
I found this thread which was very helpfull;
link to thread at gimpusers
I am still wondering though, if you need vector brushes to increase hardness/softness, how come you can increase size of gbr brushes? as they are not vector I would think they would become blurred at higher sizes.
