Oh, Lyle, Rod is correct. I copied Jolie's tutorial from Gimp Tricks. I had gotten permission from her a very long time ago to copy any of her tutorials to Gimp Chat.

Good to know, I just learned the other day about making a new palette from any image and then using it to pick your foreground/background colors

She mentions my tip for making a gradient with a palette and I hadn't posted it in Gimp Chat.

Here's the tip I had written and put over in Gimp Talk.

Making a new gradient with several colors takes awhile to make when you have several colors to add to the endpoints in the Gradient Editor.

A quicker way to do it is in the Palettes Editor:

GIMP 2.4x: <Toolbox> File > Dialogs > Palettes
GIMP 2.6x: Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Palettes

In the Palettes dialog, click the New Palette icon at the bottom - sheet of paper with a gold star - that brings up the Palette Editor.

In the Palette Editor give your palette a name. Then enter colors. Make the FG color the color you want in the palette and click the icon at the bottom to add the color to the palette (Ctrl + Click will enter the BG color). Keep doing that for each color you want in your eventual gradient.

When you have finished putting in the colors, close the Palette Editor. In the Palettes dialog right-click the palette you made and click Palette to Gradient. Your palette is now a gradient with the same name.

If you don't want to keep the palette you made, select it and click the trashcan at the bottom. The palettes that come with GIMP can't be edited but you can click Duplicate and make a new palette from one of them.
