This tutorial is not mine. I even tried doing it and I got stuck at the part where the sprite bottle was inserted. The user didn't even explain how to insert it. I'm wondering if anyone here can take this video tutorial and turn it into a written text version so it will be easier to follow.

Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTAeab41uE8

Thanks,

Mackenzie

In that video 'to be imported' images were already open in GIMP (gimp 2.6, hence a multiple-window mode only)
and what he did to insert it into work-on image was a simple Copy/Paste operation.

That makes sense now but I think he still could have explained it instead of saying in the video that we should already know how to do that step.

Hi Mackenzie,

I watched the video, she has early procured the image of the Sprite bottle (also the fruit slices) and has them saved as jpg files.
Gimp allows you to have multiple images open concurrently.
She is simply opening them as a new image. File->Open (sprite.jpg or whatever it has been named)
Then Edit->Copy (the sprite bottle)
Switch back to your Refresh Background image.
Then Edit->Paste to copy it into your Refresh Background image.

She does this in the same manner for the fruit slices.
I also note she is using a brush set called Water Splashes (I think that was the name) too.

Hope that helps you along a bit.

Sorry, I meant to say multiple-window in 2.6. The single-window mode was introduced in gimp 2.8x series (circa2011) and the video is dated 2009.

Thanks, Fluffy Bunny that does help. I will try out the tutorial again and see what I come up with. Oh, how do I get rid of the white background on the photos since they aren't transparent?

Without seeing the images it is difficult to determine the most appropriate method, you could use the Fuzzy Select tool, click on the white area, then Select->Grow by 1px then press your Delete key.

Here are the images I plan to use:

I will try that method. Thanks, Fluffybunny. Now maybe I can come up with something. Oh.. I saw the brushes, but I went with others that I found that look more realistic. :)

Sorry, I forgot to mention 1 step.
Once you have opened those images in Gimp, you will need to first 'right click' the layer then 'Add Alpha Channel. To give them the ability to be transparent ;)

PS: You will also have to remove the shadow area from one of those orange slices too.

there are several methods to render an image
make sure each image has an alpha channel first

one method is to use the eraser tool and erase carefully all that is not needed
that method is kind of crude, but simple

another method is doing the same with the lasso tool or even more refined with the paths tool
so you make a selection around the object, invert and then delete
here is a tutorial for the paths tool
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqFC1sSxF9U

then you have all the tools to render an image: you have the fuzzy select tool, the select by colour tool and the foreground selection tool
for simple images with a lot of contrast between object and background, these can work great and quickly
check the manual for an explanation how to use these

a more complex, yet sophisticated technique is the use of layermasks
a very good tutorial can be found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRBXzVzwEoM

the really cool thing about using a layermask to render an image, is that its non destructive and you can always make changes and refine edges

finally there is the G'MIC filter Split Object, which is excellent and can be a very quick way of getting rid of the background of an image

These are all great options that I will definitely use. Thanks, everyone. Esper, under what category is the G'MIC filter Split Object listed?

After watching her video again, I would like to offer one more tip Mackenzieh.
When she adds the Sprite bottle image to her Refresh Background image, she scales it down to 40%, then determines it is still not small enough, then scales it again.

It is hard to follow exactly what she does, but my advice is not to re-scale your already scaled image.
You will lose quality, it would be preferable to Undo your first scale (Ctrl-Z), then scale the original to the size you want.

Goodluck, feel free to ask any more questions you may have. Look forward to seeing your final results.
(I fear her use of the layer masks may trip you up though ;))

Thanks, Fluffy, I'll need the luck. lol! I probably will not use layer masks since she didn't show her users how to do that step. I'll probably use the fuzzy select tool or another options mentioned. :)

What version of G'mic are you running?
Refresh your Filters list by pressing the 'double arrow' button below the filters list.
Then as Esper said above look in Testing->Garagecoder, it should be in there.

I would also like to add here, totally not relative to the subject, that gimpknowhow is actually a prepubescent boy. You can hear 'her' voice drop in later videos.

Oops.. I apologize. Apparently he hasn't updated in a quite a while since he can't access his gimpknowhow channel & has created a new one.
