Note: This script functions within Gimp Version 2.8,
however it has not been tested in Gimp 2.10.

Wallace, there's a script to put vertical and horizontal guides at 50% of the image, named "Crosshair guides". It's very useful.

Or, you can go to image guides > guides by percent. Just use the dropdown arrow for horizontal and vertical.

If you just need to find an exact center, two diagonal lines from the corners on transparent layer will do the job.
Snap to grid feature is easy to overlook. Besides, unlike actual guides you can turn off the visibility of a 'guide' layer.
As for the predefined guides script, GAT is the most versatile, imo - http://registry.gimp.org/node/25332

GAT tools is good but I keep forgetting about it being in the tools menu. I don't know if it was mentioned, Grid of guides is a good one to have as well.
