I wanted to map a panorama to an animated cube and found it was more difficult than I thought.

I tried G'MIC '3d image object [animated]' but could not get 4 sides onto a cube. It may be possible but it eluded me. Then I tried the Map to Object/Gimp-GAP technique http://gimpchat.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2255&start=0
That didn't work for me.

So I used 'Map to Object' and manually saved every 5 degree slider increments between +180 and -180.
This works well until it stopped at -45 degrees.

Amazingly, I found if I entered -44 instead of -45 the 'Map to Object' filter continued on.
I think there is a mathematical bug in the 'Map to Object' filter and it has been discovered by other people.

Knowing how to get around this bug has given me more confidence using Map to Object.
I wonder if that's why it is so hard for it to work with GAP 'filter all layers'?

Tas_Mania, That is a beautiful effect! Would you mind doing a tutorial on that?

I had the same problem on 45 degrees and -45 degrees. Occasionally at 135 and -135.
I believe there is a divide by zero error in there somewhere.

Hi Pat625.
I was following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK0KxCG77O4
Unfortunately Gimp-GAP has not kept-up with Gimp releases and stopped at version 2.6. GAP 'map to object' was being used in that video to rotate all the frames between the first and the last frames, but that part of GAP no longer works for me. That's why I'm saving frame by frame using Map to Object with the 'box' option.
Instead of having different images on each side of your box you put them in a 'landscape' sequence using the Map to Object 'box' tab.

It's quite easy to do if you use a panorama landscape big enough to wrap around your box. The video shows how to adjust the sliders to get a good result. You can rotate your box vertically (X axis) or horizontally (Y axis) as I did.
To get them right test with the Y slider on the 'Orientation' tab.
I didn't use an image on top and only a base image because I'm looking up at my rotating box.
Finally, the last side will meet-up with the first side and I like them to merge together which makes the animation 'infinite'.
The desert is ideal for this because I only had to tweak the horizon using the distorts tool with a little smudge.
Cheers

Hi PhotoMaster,
Exactly where it stopped for me. Interesting if altering the angles by one degree up or down allows you to continue the process on a Windows system? A small change like that is not noticed in a finished animation.

Map to Object is a core Gimp component and according to the bug list all bugs have been resolved except the one caused by GAP.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/buglist.cgi?list_id=91665&product=GIMP&query_format=advanced&short_desc=Map%20to%20Object&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr

On the positive side, I'm sure Map to Object can handle large high-res animations and it doesn't have the Rubiks cube base glitch
