Missing menu entry for 'Fade Retinex' in 2.10.18

Wed May 13, 2020 7:05 pm

I am a newby to this forum, but a constant Gimp user, rather than a programmer/fixer, of photo manipulation with Gimp.

I was very disappointed to find that the menu entry for 'Fade Retinex' was missing from Gimp 2.10.18 on my new 64-bit LTS Ubuntu laptop. Which means that I have to keep Gimp 2.8.22 running on the old ailing 32-bit laptop.

I have played a little with various combinations of settings in 'Retinex' alone, but cannot seem to arrive at the same results as running 'Retinex' at the default setting and then applying 'Fade Retinex' from the Edit menu with the >Replace Opacity option back down to between 50% and 25% to achieve the results I desire.

Reading the various comments on this forum, it seems that it is to do with the 'end-of-life' of Python2. Virtually anything (Plug-ins?) written in Python has not necessarily been rewritten/upgraded to Python3.

So my query is this: When can I/we expect that the missing menu entries will be re-instated in their former glory, but under the be-all, end-all Python3?

Have you tried using GMIC's Retinex?

Fade is gone from Gimp 2.10 for various reasons. Might come back in a later version of Gimp but do not hold your breath.

@Marvin
Have downloaded the the latest stable GMI'C - lots more options, will try them out
@rich2005
OK, I am steeling myself to say bye, bye 'Fade Retinex' - will just have to seek out alternative methodology.

Thanks for your input
