Post subject:  Inpaint [version] none works

Hello All

Debian Buster - 10 GIMP-2.10.8 , G'MIC 2.4.5

Wanted to start toying around with the various G'MIC inpaint plugins seeing if it simplifies things for removing objects in a photo.
Have looked at many tutorials by now,on the procedure to this correctly as none of them will work for me.

1. Open photo in GIMP
2. Free select tool, make a free select area around portion to be removed, press ENTER to make active, (antialiasing IS disabled)
3. Fill the area with red color
4. Open G'MIC-qt, select any of inpaint[version] plugin to do its thing. Click Apply, Click OK, nothing happens. The red filled area is still red.
5. Updated the G'Mic package from G'Mic website to v 2.8.3 and done update in gmic gui to update, shows 2.8.3 & no changes in the end result.

Also I setup GIMP & G'MIC on a windows VM with the same result.
I am probably missing something obvious.

Again antialias IS disabled in the free select settings.

Thank You

I haven't explored all of them but the fill holes inpaint works on transparent areas on a layer with an alpha channel.

Hi Erisian,

Thank You for the reply.
I thought maybe you were onto something in regards to alpha channel. so I added alpha channel to existng test photo, but this did not change any results.
Still nothing happens with any of the inpaint plugins.
Also as an aside,,i did find a log file in home folder/gmic,,,I think when i installed the updated gmic-3.8.3 but the log file is totally empty so not sure how to enable it,,or whatever.

Thank You

It works fine here. You can use the Pencil to paint directly on the layer. If you want to use a free form selection, you must add an empty layer above, make the selection and fill with red, then merge down to the target layer. Use Inpaint [Multi-Scale] on that layer. Works better with the Pencil tool in my opinion.....

I normally use kubuntu 18.04 / Gimp 2.10.14 / compile my own gmic_gimp_qt

However, this in a Debian 10 VM / Gimp 2.10.8 / my gmic_gimp_qt 2.8.3 and a lamp post removal.

So it should work, not over quick, a couple of minutes for that 4600 x 3500 px image. Not wonderful either, If for real I would maybe divide into 3 sections with slightly different parameters for each bit.

If you need to try another version I keep mine here: https://www.gimp-forum.net/Thread-gmic- ... untu-18-04 but I doubt if the problem is David Tschumperlé version

Just a thought. You do turn the active selection off after filling with red ? (edit: although you should still get a rsult)

FYI, I used G'mic v2.8.3 on my example and all previous versions worked well also.

Necessary condition: The brush / area color must match the mask color (not necessarily red - but identical).

Thank You much to each response..

Rich I tried your prebuilt GMIC package with same results,
And come to find out i did not have EXACT some color shade of red,,I did not know they had to be identical,,I was just getting 'close'.
As soon as i sent both the brush to the exact html number of the gmic inpaint plugin the colored area was masked. Thank You MareoQ
Next,,,my results are pretty bad.. Was hoping id get much more fluid results but about the same as using resynthesizer tool.
Ill have to do some expereminting, At least it works now,,This was about to drive me nuts.
This should probably be a step given in inpaint tutorials,,for rookies like me.

Thank You

I thought it would be a given that the painted color would equal the mask color. Maybe I assumed too much then......?

Anyway it works OK, not perfect, but then........what is?
