Installed g'mic for gimp 1.5.4.0 into gimp 2.8.4 under Windows XP SP3.
I can access the g'mic filter but when I try to Apply/OK g'mic is not responding (crashes).
What am I doing wrong?
Is there a place where I can get the latest version for gimp 2.8.4 under Windows?
Thanks,
Nathan

Can you post your Error Console log output.
Windows → Dockable Dialogs → Error Console

Here is what I got:
GIMP Error
Plug-in crashed: "gmic_gimp.exe"
(C:\Documents and Settings\Nathan\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\gmic_gimp.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

Hmm that sounds very odd... so you can go to Filters -> G'MIC, select a filter and the preview works. But as soon as you try to actually Apply/OK it crashes? :(

Could you possibly tell me:

What size (height, width) of image are you working with?
Is it happening with all G'MIC filters or one of them?

Then I'll try to help! :crash

YES
Image size 3648x2736
Tried Rotoidoscope 6 minutes, Lylejk's Painting 5 minutes, Pen drawing 3 minutes.
The progress bar at the bottom of screen keeps moving back and forth but nothing happens.
When I go to Windows Task Manager I see:
G'mic for gimp 1.5.4.0 not responding.

OK this might sound crazy but could you try applying this filter: Filters -> G'MIC -> Various -> Do nothing
And tell me what happens? It's possible with an image that size on certain computers those filters could take a very long time (yes even up to minutes!).

The "Do nothing" worked fine.
I tried it with smaller size images and it worked. I resized that image to 1024x768 and it worked. So it looks like image size is a problem.
Would you be kind enough to try on an image size 3648x2736 to see if you can reproduce the problem.
Thanks,
Nathan

Coming right up!

Gimp 2.8.4, G'MIC 1.5.4.0 x64
Core2 3GHz, 8GB
3648x2736

Test 1: From gimp plugin, pen drawing takes approx 1 minute using max 500mb RAM
Test 2: From command line 32bit gmic, pen drawing still around 1 minute/500mb (even with alpha)
Test 3: From gimp, Lylejk's painting takes 2mins 30 using max 600mb RAM

So to summarise, I nearly burnt my dinner in the oven waiting for it all to finish :hehe
I think the filters are probably just taking a long time on your computer. It will depend on the CPU and amount of free RAM. The artistic filters tend to be the most "heavy" so on a large image it's very likely to happen, this is by design as G'MIC uses high precision maths (which is slower and uses more memory but produces better quality output). Maybe not the news you were looking for but I hope that helps understand why :)

Yep now I know.
I have Pentium 4, 2.86Hz, 1.5Gb x32
I increased the size of Tile Cache and it did not crush. It took a looong time to finish but it worked. At least I know that I am not on a wild goose chase.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for staying with me on this.
Stay well,
Nathan
