try to check (using search) if in gimp you have
1 and ONLY 1 curl.exe
1 and ONLY 1 zlib.exe
1 and ONLY 1 wget.exe

If you have 2 , if you have a clone, none of the 2 will work , you apparently will get the same problem to have none, Gmic will not work, or at least refresh will not work

This may happens more easily when changing gmic version in with the portable partha builds because some exe and dll already included because needed not only by gmic but also by other plugins, (i.e. zlib)

I need to think a bit about it, in order to propose some other tests to do.

My thought is that if he has this file, then the mechanism to retrieve it from the network is working...

alc59: You could always download G'MIC directly from the website and drop it into your Plug-ins folder. (That would solve the problem... :) ).

Well, that's not exactly how it works, as the file will be copied in the temp directory only if it has been read without any problems (to avoid caching partial data for instance).

Thanks folks! Works great in Windows Vista 32 bit.

Hello. I'm running 64-bit Windows and I have the same problem as alc59. Sometimes. :gaah

After some trial and error, it seems like problems happen with layers that have an alpha channel. There's no preview, and if I apply the filter I don't receive an error message but the result is an empty transparent layer. Maybe the filter is acting on the alpha channel only?

If the layer does NOT have an alpha channel, the filters work fine. So as a workaround, removing the alpha channel before running G'MIC does the trick. At least for me. So far. Hope this helps.

Hello. I'm running 64-bit Windows 8.1 Partha build and I have the same problem as alc59.

I do have 2 curl.exe files. One in gimp-2.8\bin and one in gimp-2.8\.gimp-2.8\bin. alternately renaming them did nothing.

Looks like my G'MIC refreshed properly. Although I haven't tried the filters yet. I noticed though I seem to have more filters than others (509) , which I doubt is a negative, I am still using G'MIC 1.5.6.0.
That black window comes up for me every time I open Gimp but it goes away and Gimp works alright so I don't worry about it.

EDIT:
Shows in my previews fine.

I have found the solution for ALC59 and my issue.

Replace the gimp-2.8\bin\curl.exe file in Partha's 2.8 build for windows 64 bit with the new curl.exe file found in the latest Gmic download. In my case
\Downloads\gmic_gimp_win64\gmic_gimp_1.5.6.1_beta_win64\_gmic\curl.exe (439kB)

This worked for me. Thanks PhotoComixs for getting me on that track

I thought I might come in and update everyone in the status of these, and what I've been up to...

When David first announces this, we had a few different film stocks to emulate.

For instance, these are all of the old film stocks at their lowest strength setting:

These are the newer film stock emulations:

Here are the consumer instant films:

And the professional grade instant films:

I've been working on getting even more ready to release, including color slide films, and a slew of black and white films as well.

There are some more sample plates available on my latest post that show what some of the new upcoming emulations look like:

It looks like these emulations are 'copied' from commercial products (VSCO and Filmpack). I wonder if there will be a problem for copyrights/trademarks?

I considered that.

1. They don't own the names of the films.
2. I don't believe you can copyright a style. (For instance, one cannot copyright the color effects produced through split toning, cross processing, etc.).
3. Though similar, they aren't exact. There are some differences (from what I could find in other samples).

What happens if we all are trying to emulate the same films, and all get reasonably close?

Of course, IANAL. :)

Hello,

Thank you for the excellent work!
I'm currently on a W7 64-bit laptop with Partha's GIMP 2.8.6. I'm still getting 'Preview Error' and when hitting the apply button:
--
*** Error in ./gimp_emulate_film_bw/_gimp_emulate_film/*if/*if/ *** cimg::load_network_external(): Failed to load file
'<url>/data_film_presets/agfa_apx_100.cimgz' with external tools 'wget' or 'curl'.
--
(I had to remove the GMIC SourceForge url to post this message.)
I updated GIMP C:\Program Files\Gimp-2.8.6\bin\curl with the version from the G'MIC gmic_gimp_1.5.7.0_win64\_gmic folder as suggested in this thread but that didn't help. Is there something else I should try?

Feature request: it would be great to be able to use the Film Emulation functionality disconnected from the 'net.

Best regards,

Patrick.

Did you check to make sure there weren't multiple copies of curl in those directories? (I think PhotoComix mentioned something about that somewhere). You might be able to just install the latest G'MIC directly, but not sure how it will interact with Parthas bundled G'MIC.

HI,

I am very disappointed with the new policy "Network" of G'MIC.
Despite much and much work, I still can not run the film "emulation" (I have the same errors as already mentioned ...)
I do not want to spend more time to debug these network problems than make photography: I give up!
I give up !!
I deeply regret that I find this policy contrary to the idea of "free software".
I also regret the multiple traps download I met on your pages ...
For me, a Must collapses. pity...

(Sorry, my english is rather poor)

Which new policy ?
The film emulation filters need to download color profiles to work correctly, and each of these profile takes approx. 280-300Kb, and there are 166 of them !
So of course, they are not included directly in the plug-in binary, and you *need* an active Internet connection to download them when you want to apply them.
I'm sorry but I really don't see anything opposed to the "free software" concept.

Which traps ? It seems Sourceforge makes some aggressive advertising when one wants to download the binary files of G'MIC.
It is not perfect, but you have to take care on which link you click. The G'MIC binaries we post on the site are ads-free and does not install undesired software.
