Also, note that the G'MIC online service does manage 16bits image editing.
You can for instance upload a 16bits PNG as an input and apply a filter, the result will be in 16bits
(without any 8 bits conversion during the process).

I've seen that question asked before PC, there are good reasons why it's not been done (i.e. why bother when you have gimp already :cool ) and the command line gmic is powerful.

yes were good reason but looking the online version i get the impression that a big part of the job is already done.

Yes without doubt
But why graphic wrapper Should be more limited ?..oh please wait before react :hehe , let me explain better :
there is any technical reason to prevent a hypothetical gimp standalone to have 2 tabs, 1 tab similar to the actual plugin or web app... and the second tab instead embedding a terminal to be used exactly as the command line version?

It is a crazy idea ? It is true that nobody did yet something similar but will be no possible ?
one tab for who like play with sliders, the other to experiment the command line
(i believe that if was in the same interface many more will try the command line .. )

Yes i know
It is mainly this that i wonder if will be no possible transform it from web app to a standalone app ,(even without the complication needed to add a "terminal tab" )

@Garagecoder, PhotoComiX : To be honest, I'm not sure that coding a specific GUI for G'MIC is really a good idea. For instance, when using the GIMP plug-in, I'm often using also some of the GIMP native functionalities to achieve some of the effects I want to render. I believe that if someone starts a G'MIC-based GUI, he will one day have a need for interactive painting tools or something equivalent, and will end up in coding a brand new painting software :p
To me, it seems more reasonable to try integrating G'MIC into an existing painting software. It has been done not too bad for GIMP, and personally the next target I'd love to see would be Krita (http://krita.org/).
It becomes a serious competitor to GIMP, already manage 16bits/channel images, and is coded in C++, so it would perfectly fits the requirements to host a G'MIC-based plug-in. Moreover, I already had some e-mails with the main coder of Krita, and he would be probably interested by some of the G'MIC functionalities.
The only thing I'm not really sure about, is if it has a nice plug-in API.

My dream would be to see someone porting the actual G'MIC for GIMP plug-in to Krita. This would be a new interesting interface for using G'MIC stuffs, with a nice painting environment, probably much better than any new GUI designed only for G'MIC, IMHO.

EDIT : They just have announced the creation of the Krita fundation. I'm really enthusiastic about the project, and subscribed to their Flattr channel, so I'm donating a little bit of money each month (not so much, as my current Flattr account for G'MIC has only few euros on it, but still, this is a symbolic donation :p ).

I see your point but a standalone app may be ALSO used as plugin AT LEAST to edit the active drawable ,many of the best Phoshop plugin(i.e FilterForge that is vaguely similar to a gmic with a extra tab for assemble graphically nodes ) are so:
standalone app that may be launched directly or called by Photoshop to work on the active layer (PS plugin SDK do not allow 3rd party plugin to do much more then edit the active layer )

sure a similar plugin would have limit but the advantage to be easily adapted to different graphic editor

for sure this is a brilliant idea

Krita does indeed look interesting although for me to try it out I'll have to get linux up and running which I haven't for a very long time
I fully agree the best way to promote gmic in general is by integrating it into existing paint packages, but c++ is new to me so for now a krita plugin would be way beyond me. I like the idea of contributing to it though so I will look into it as soon as I am able.

*edit* aha just noticed it's done with Qt so there is a windows version, going to give it a bash :yes

I was reading about the new release of MyPaint
http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entr ... 0-released

also in mypaint will be nice have gmic ,expecially for the artistic , the color mixer ( even more for the Cymk color mixer that combine well with digital painting, it is more adapt to work with (even if simulated ) pigments

...and for the frames or to map the paint in object ... i may imagine many uses for a mypaint gmic plugin

Yes of course from mypaint it is always possible switch to gimp and back...but i think many will prefer to just switch to gmic, if possible...

Again just be able get the input from the active Mypaint layer/selection and send the output back would be more then sufficient for most of uses
