Hello there,
I've added a new filter Arrays & tiles / Montage into the G'MIC plug-in for GIMP. This filter has been suggested by Patrick David, so thanks Pat for the great idea :)
Just refresh your filters and it should appear.
What it does is take several input layers and make a collage from them, where the layout can be specified by the user.
Frame and padding options can be set optionally. The filter resizes and move the images automatically to comply with the
specified layout. This is actually a quick and easy way to make generic collage from your layers, without having to do this by
hand. Here is an example of what you can get in few seconds, with such a filter :

And here is a tutorial video that shows the different options of this filter :

I hope you'll like it !

Coolies. Been waiting for something like this. I usually only print small pictures (6x8") but have some A4 photo paper which I want to use and now I can!
Thank you both :)

Carlos, try to update your filters once again, this issue should have been fixed few hours ago.

Very nice filter David, I opened up 5 pictures and ran the filter and the result is great but I tried to send it as a jpg in an email but it is too large. Is there a way, It turned into 4.6 MB

Molly my advice is to try the RIOT GIMP plug-in and try and get the file size down.Lowering quality without any real change to the human eye can do that for you.

Molly should be :
1. settings: angle 9 angle variations 18 others default
2. create background in a new bottom layer
3. write text in a top trasparent layer

I didnt find how to put a frame in each pictures with this filter

Here is an example of using the actual RIOT application. This isn't the plug-in for GIMP, but you could use it instead.

This image was 2.5 mb and was reduced to 260 kb

Thank you very much Marcello. I will try it tomorrow.
I think you would have to put the frame around each picture first. not sure

David would it be possible to have an output dimension size setting

The output dimension actually depends on the input image sizes.
For the 'Scaled' mode, you can set the 'Alignment/size' parameter so that :

- If set to 0, the filter will only downscale layers to create the the montage.
- If set to 1, the filter will only upscale layers to create the montage (beware, this can lead to very very large images !!)
Intermediate values create a mix between downscaled and upscaled layers (the closest to 1, the more upscaled).

If you find that the size of your final image is too big, even with 'Alignment/size=0', then you have probably provided too big input layers.
I suggest you just downscale your image (so all you layers) a little bit before applying the filter. I can add a parameter for this though :)

I've modified the parameter 'Alignment / scale' such that a scale<0.5 allows to downsize significantly the layers before doing the montage.
Refresh your filters and let me know if that is better like this.
