Hello there,

I've added a new filter Rendering / Lightning in the G'MIC plug-in for GIMP, and maybe it can interest some of you.
It is available after a filter update, it requires at least version 1.6.0.0+ to work properly.
It creates a rendering of a random lightning bold in an image, like in the example below :

It is a random process, starting from an initial streak and adding some sub-streaks connected to at least one of existing streaks.
There are plenty of parameters to play with, and you can get some funny results with this filter.
For instance, if you reverse the streak orientations, and play a little bit with the parameters, you can generate things that look like trees :

And another example :

Well, that's it for now. If you want to test this new filter, just press the 'Filter update' button, and post your trials here :)

Very nice YAFU!
Yours makes it look like it will be most useful for trees.

David would it be possible to crop the main bolt after the last branch has forked out

I wonder if this preset can be coaxed to create Kirlian photography results? Basically, you would input an outline and lightning would radiate outward from the outline. Just curious. :)

Is there anyway to make the area around the lightning brighter?
I tried with blurring but not sure that is the way.

Aha! lighting effects helps. This was just done quickly and I know it could be better, but I think this will do it!

I've added some new parameters recently, so you can set the lengths of the auxiliary streaks with more flexibility,
and get things like this :

gmic_lightning5.jpg

There is now a lot of parameters to play with. I hope this is not too much :p

Thanks Sallyanne; still, it would be cool if you could have the lightening follow an outline. :)
