[edit: I know better than to expect support for this pre-release version of gimp -- just asking in case anyone has any insight or in case it helps debug the issue for developers...]

Hello!

I am using gimp 2.9.5 on Kubuntu 16.04.1 (from the otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-edge repo) and the latest G'MIC (1.7.8_pre, though this was happening with 1.7.3 as well).

The gimp-edge/gmic combo has been working fine, but with a recent update from gimp-edge it seems to have broken the preview for gmic (see attached).

When I run gimp with "gimp --verbose" I see this in the stdout:

(gmic:13162): LibGimp-CRITICAL **: gimp_zoom_preview_set_drawable_id: assertion 'preview->priv->drawable_ID < 1' failed

(gmic:13162): LibGimp-CRITICAL **: gimp_zoom_preview_set_drawable_id: assertion 'preview->priv->drawable_ID < 1' failed

Any ideas? Is this more likely a gimp problem or a gmic problem?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Interesting, thanks.
No ideas yet, I've been using the plug-in with GIMP 2.9 as well, but maybe an older version.
I'll try to upgrade and see what happens.

Hello. I've just re-installed GIMP 2.9 from the gimp-edge PPA, compiled the G'MIC plug-in by myself, and the preview works as expected.
Cannot reproduce your problem here :(

Probably both ;)

This in a Kubuntu 16.04 with Gimp 2.9.5 from Otto ppa (no update for 3 weeks! must be on holiday) All up-to-date as of today.
Did you get your g'mic 1.7.3 from otto or the gmic.eu site?

Anyway, gmic for gimp 2.9.5 64 bit version 1.7.8pre#093016, compiled about an hour ago, is working here.

Attached if you want to give it a try, 'the usual' remove previous versions, un-zip, pop in ~/.config/GIMP/2.9/plug-ins/
Usual guarantee - there is none.

If that does not work, another possibility is a 'portable' Gimp 2.9.5 an appimage
There is a very recent one here: https://discuss.pixls.us/t/community-bu ... tware/2137
That has a gmic 1.7.8 incorporated. Makes a gimp profile ~/.config/GIMP-AppImage/2.9/ so no conflict with your existing setup. And it does work with Kubuntu 16.04 64 bit (at least it does here)

Thanks! Figured it out: I had layer/channel previews disabled, and enabling it makes it work again.

I'm curious why it has any effect, though, since the gmic preview is neither a layer nor channel preview, really? Also it'd be cool if it said "layer previews disabled" instead of "?". :-)

Having layer previews disabled also causes a few bugs in non-G'MIC filters with inline previews (e.g. Enhance -> Destripe) -- in those cases it shows the preview correctly but also overlays an unneeded "?" image on top of it.

But i'm psyched to have an answer! The AppImage build is awesome; wish I knew about it sooner. I wish more apps had contained install options.

Thanks for the help!
