Hi there,
The recent release of MyPaint has given me the idea of a 'Symmetrize' filter in G'MIC.
So here it is. It looks like this :

Image

You can symmetrize your image regarding to an axis with any orientation you want.
Let me know if you have any idea to use it for doing something interesting (I suppose this can create interesting kaleidoscope effects when run multiple times).

Hope you'll like it !

EDIT : I've also added a filter 'Symmetrizoscope' to iteratively runs 'Symmetrize' with different angles.

Very interesting. I tried it out on this baby skunk image. First I cropped off the left side as close to the skunk as possible, added an alpha channel, and used enough canvas to make the image 1000x1000 with the original image in the upper left corner of the canvas.

Results. BG is transparent. Angle 120°. X & Y adjusted to bring them close together.

I had the feeling it would please you PC :).
And as always, the filter has been done only with few lines of code, that was the idea the harder thing to think about.

Alas for me is the opposite i do have the idea but no much the skill to transform in code ...at least not all and not in a reasonable time.

Did you remember my idea for a filter for creative not linear scaling ?
(i.e to scale differently the centre and the periphery of a image , but what to scale differently may be even another option then centre vs periphery , as up vs down, maybe even highlight vs shadows, or a colour range Vs the others .... )

Now i should search the link for that discussion in the flickr group, i only remember that you suggested to try .warp and that i haven't had any success in coding it

But i still believe will be a killer filter.

just in case you was looking for some idea... :cool

That's cool David; mirroring at any angle is something that I've not really seen yet until now. :)

Thank you thank you thank you !

I was a bit disgruntled that there was no 1.1 windows version of my beloved Mypaint after having tasted a working build (one of the last before the window build were completely broken in svn) months ago that had a rough test implementation of the symmetry tool.

And you just delivered this amazing tool in G'MIC , and it even works with my working Gimp 2.6.10 , playing with it a bit with my mypaint sketches i found that it works even better than i thought .

After having toying a lot today with Photoshop CS2 that was released semi-accidentally for free by adobe on their website, i was wondering if keeping Gimp 2.6.10 (as the 2.8.x serie has that tearing picture big annoyance that will not be fixed before years for Gimp 3.0 on windows) was really needed on my system , but thanks to that Symmetrise tool it gave me the answer, 2.6.10 is finally going to stay on my hard drive.

Amazing job !

Thank you very much !
Is it possible to add the option (by choice):
- just the reflection (without source);
- choice by the axis x or y.
Application - mainly for brush (lack of reflection by axis ....)
There are other scripts for this purpose - but it may be easier with G'mic

After using this a lot since a few month, i can't say enough how much i love this Symmetrise function.

Image

So very helpfull for a mouse penciller :D like me that fight with the mouse to draw anything or creating textures for my models

The only problem i can think after using it a lot is that in Gmic , when you zoom in , the symmetry center move, the same if while zooming in you move the preview left or right.
And this zoomed symmetry center location is not the real one (the real one is still only real when you're at the default preview size).

That makes it hard sometime to place the symmetry center with precision (as precision would require zooming in).

But out of this problem, it's so awesome and usefull in the same time that i wish it was a real time function in gimp :D

This is a known limitation of the G'MIC plugin. As I understand it GIMP can only pass a small image to G'MIC for the preview and this means that G'MIC can never show a truly accurate preview.

However, it might be possible to change the filter to accept a second layer, say a white dot on a black background, that can be used as the symmetry centre. But I'm not familiar with the inner workings of the filter so I'm just guessing.
