I think Rod had in mind - what I see?
Instead of (or in addition): View -> Dialogs-> Backgrund
Use the File-> Open Image (with the option to drag and drop the *. * - The file formats available-png, bmp, tif, etc.).

Or should nothing be open and a new layer just appears.

What are your exact steps?

I have my knotter cake open in Knotter.
I have the graph showing.
I Edit and Select All
Edit Copy
Move to gimp and try to Edit Paste
Nothing.

There is nothing in the clipboard of gimp to paste.
The steps ore correct. It works as a normal paste for me. If GIMP has nothing open, it will create a new image, otherwise it creates a floating selection. Can you try to copy to Inkscape?

As far as I understand Shellout is to use a temporary file on which an external program will operate and then that file will be imported back into GIMP. So, as Knotter is concerned, it should export to that image. I don't see how opening images from Knotter (as background or otherwise) can fit in this workflow.
Anyway, ShellOut.py sends the images to the command line.

My wish list is different - but typical.
Send to External Editor (example Delabolatory).

Maybe that will be possible with some plugin.
The command that needs to be launched will have to be configurable, at least at the beginning this may require the user to change the plugin source.

In anticipation of the next version ...
For Windows [XP 32 bit and GIMP 2.8.4] option: copy (Knotter) -> paste (GIMP) - it works for me (open a new image and paste) - just to gaze at a Path !

Copy/paste works between Knotter and Inkscape (just tried this; cool). Makes sense since Knotter is a vector editor. Doesn't take much to export the bitmap from Inkscape to GIMP or, run Shellout to Inkscape, paste into Inkscape and save to appropriate bitmap file and close Inkscape (just a suggested work-a-round). We are use to using surrogates since Shellout so why not. lol

Personally, I can just port the SVG file then open the result into GIMP. To each his (or her) own. :)

What's cool about scaling in Inkscape is it keeps the symmetry better then scaling in Knotter. Was going to say something about that a while ago but knew Mattia has a lot on his slate (and still does; lol). I scaled this one 500% for an example. :)

Here's what happens when you stretch in Knotter (well I did scale it more in Inkscape to keep the size the same as afore, but you can get the drift. I can understand why Knotter is the way it is because it keeps the segment width size constant. aesthetically, I like the scaling version better of course, but you can't have multiple width of segment lines in Knotter. :)

The new spiral plug-in is pretty cool. :)

Just saying i wonder why it works for Marero in Gimp-2.8.4 but not myself.

It's that way as Knotter only operates on the graph, not on the image. Transformations like scale and rotate actually change the position of the nodes and nothing more. To reflect this the Action History says "Scale Nodes".
Being able to give different widths to different parts of the knot is something I'd like to do. Ideally, it would be cool to set the width node-wise to have some cool effects.
The problem is that SVG dows not support strokes with different width for the same path and thus the operation would require to implement something like the stroke to path function in Inkscape. I've done some research and it looks like that it requires some complex math so I postponed this for now.
Only when that will be implemented it would be possible to make scaling the selection retain all of its proportions.

It's weird that pasting on GIMP works only for some :?... If this is a useful feature I can fix it and add to the clipboard PNG data.

Actually you can paste into GIMP but only a special case (just tried this). Go to path's dialoge and then paste path. Of course you only get the path (no color information). Also, the path will look distorted based on the x/y dimensions of you GIMP session and fill the complete area of those dimensions (see screenshot). :)

Sorry if I misunderstand the problem here but if your knot is selected you can export it and then open it in Gimp.

Yes you can do that Erisian; some folks, though, like using the clipboard. :)

I do not see the changes. How did you use?

Now I've added some configuration options in the preferences dialog. Disabling SVG from the clipboard should make pastes to gimp work. I've updated the downloads.

It should work... Dunno, there may be something weird in the way GIMP handles pastes.
