GIMP/Graphic Software, Basic Terminology

Thu Jun 18, 2020 1:26 pm

Recently I was asked this question:
"What is the basic terminology use within Gimp and or other graphics software?"

What I was thinking,
would be to come up with a list of useful terminology,
that beginners might encounter.

For example:

Basic Gimp/Graphics Software Terminology

  • Layers
  • Layer Mask
  • Image Mode
  • Grayscale
etc.

If you would like to participate.
Feel free to add something,
that you feel would be beneficial terminology to know,
for those new to Gimp or graphics software in general.

Once we have a nice healthy and often used list of basic terminology.
Then we can start to define the list,
with a synopsis/brief summary for each of the terms used in our list.

As suggested by GC member rich2005.

The Gimp Help Glossary is a good jumping off point.

Didn't look at Rich's link, but a few of the things most misunderstood and the least used are dynamics, channel masks (including using alpha), and paths.

I think the thing that seems to catch a lot of people out is the concept of "resolution" and the difference between pixels and real-world units.

And there's the multiple meanings of the word "render"
