Printing with an Epson Artiscan 1430

Fri Dec 13, 2013 8:06 pm

Greetings from Brooklyn:

I'm made the plunge for the first time and aquired a large size printer for prints. I researched it and the printer is supposed to be fully functional with linux and the gimp. I got the printer and some 13x19 premium luster paper. But I can't get the gimp to accept a 13x19 custom size or to print at that size. It printed 8.5x11 fine. when I tried printing 13x19 cups kicked back an error

Fri 13 Dec 2013 07:11:01 PM EST
"/opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201114w/cups/lib/filter/epson_inkjet_printer_filter failed"

Then I tried to print 16x9 which outputted a small picture size image and then I tried JB3 with is in theory a little larger than the paper. That resulted in a 8 1/2x11 print way blown up, I guess so that only about a quarter of the image printed. I can't seem to get CUPS to accept a default other than 8x11 ...

So, since this paper and ink is expensive, I thought I'd ask the experts rather than my historical approach which is play with it until I understand how it works, and failing that, rewriting the source code until it works how I want :).

I'd be very greatful for any help or tips I can get.

Ruben

What resolution are you using? You should be using at least 300ppi.
Also check the print size in Gimp.

Hi mrbrklyn,
You didn't say so but apparently you are using some flavor of Linux.
As far as modifying the source code, forget it.
The software that's supplied for Linux by Epson is binary only.

Now I might be able to help you with this but I need to know more about how you installed this printer.
(By the way it is Artisan, not Artiscan)
I assume you used cups to install this printer.
If your distro did it "automagically" then you might want to do it manually.

Another program additionally to cups that usually works better with the Gimp is gutenprint.

Gerard.

There was no ppd for the printer so I downloaded and manually installed one from epson:

LINK REMOVED BECAUSE OF ADMIN SETTINGS

Product name Artisan 1430, Epson Stylus Photo 1430, Epson Stylus Photo 1500
Language All language
OS Linux
Country/Region All country
Version Ver. latest(02-2012)

It shows up in cups as a Artisan 1430, but with gutenprint, only upto a stylus 1410 is available or an artisan 850

FWIW this is on opensuse 12.2
It just won't take a custom paper field. I was able to finally get the A3+ size to work responably.

I'm from NYC as well. Born and raised on Staten Island and lived in Woodside Queens for most of my adult life, up until a few years ago.
Hope you get a handle on your printing issues. Sorry that I haven't anything to add that might help.

Hi mrbrklyn,
Epson support for Linux has taken a nose-dive.
What you probably need is the latest foomatic-db.
Install it with its dependencies.
Then move /etc/cups/printer.conf as a backup.
Turn on the printer.
Re-install the printer by opening "localhost:631" (w/o quotes) in your browser.
Go to Administration and then click Find Printer.
You probably get the message:No printer found but it probably did.(cups quirk)
Go back to Administration and then click Add Printer.
If all went well you'll see your printer there.
Tick it and continue.
If you can't find your printer then choose Supply a ppd file.
In your case it's located in /opt/epson-inkjet-printer-201114w/ppds.
Now if you want to use gutenprint run "cups-genppd.5.2" to bring gutenprint up to date.

I am not entirely sure all this will work in opensuse.
As you can see in my sig I use Gentoo which differs from binary distro's.

I recently replaced my Epson Stylus Photo RX 560 with an Epson XP-750.
I still haven't got it running well in Gimp+gutenprint.
It simply refuses to print borderless.
As a workaround I intend to transfer my photo work to Windows 7 which I have running in Virtualbox.

If I can be of any further help just holler.
Gerard.

thanx

Any thoughts on interfacing with the printers reporting mechanism to see the status of the ink cartriges?

Not in Linux.
But doesn't yours have an LCD panel where you can check things?
That's how I do it.
