Just curious as to the reasons one might choose to use 2.6 instead of 2.8 what are the + and -

My reason is simple. I've done the cost benefit analysis and determined the following:
For the upgrade:
Nothing - there aren't any features that I know about in 2.8 that I feel I would benefit from.

Against the upgrade:
Having to learn new ways of doing things:- Save/Export, New sliders etc.

I'm not anti the changes that have been made, I just don't feel I need to have to go through the learning process for no benefit.

I see, I was wondering if it had something to do with favourite plugins or wether the older version is better?

I still have GIMP 1.2.4 installed. Why? Some filters were never ported to new version of GIMP that I, on very rare occasions, still like to play with. One such filter is called Multitile. This example is not the best case for the use of the Honeybee preset though. lol

I still use 2.6.11. Windows 7. My reasons for staying with 2.6.11 is that I tried 2.8. I found it lagging in brush movements. Perhaps this has been fixed. I like the ability to save in many file types instead of exporting. Functionally, apart from layer groups 2.8 seems to offer not much more that would entice me to go to 2.8. I do not like the new slider method of adjustments.
There is nothing inherintently wrong with 2.8. I have tried a few versions and felt disappointed with its supposed benefits.
But, I am very comfortable with 2.6.11, I have used it for 4 years or so. I am lazy, I really do not want to go through another learning experience for such little improvement.
I eagerly await the next 2.10 version

I have 2 Gimp install , one is the regular 2.8.10 install and another is a portable version of 2.6.12

A big advantage of 2.6.x is that, at least on windows, it load in a few seconds, while 2.8.x takes more time for no obvious reason (as this is with as much plugins+scripts in 2.6.x as there are in 2.8.x)

The only advantage i see in 2.8.x is the brush system that is very improved and the one-window thing for those annoyed by the floating panels (though i am so used to those floating panels that i stayed with them)

After that in term of performance and stability, it's +/- the same, at least the post-2.8.6 version of 2.8.x , as on windows version from before 2.8.6 were afflicted by such an annoying image tearing visual bug when moving/zooming the canvas that it rendered work too annoying for any serious use, while 2.6.12 was rock solid. And 2.8.x was slower noticably than 2.6.12

Fortunately a bug that had been fixed in 2.8.6 (and following) and since then 2.8.10 and 2.6.12 on my system have the same visual stability and performance (i guess the slowdown was fixed in the same time).
Now if only loading time were the same.

Took me awhile to go to 2.8. Not really sure why. Perhaps just laziness. Then I made the move to 2.8, because I knew that eventually, the scripts, etc, would stop being made for 2.6. Now I'm looking forward to 2.9.

Video>frames modify>Fonction>Apply filter on layer(s)>plu-in-map-object don't work on Gimp 2.8.10.
Filters>Filter all layer(s)>plug-in-map-object don't work on Gimp 2,8.10 too.

I still use 2.6.11 because of the brush lag when using a graphics tablet, the sliders are a pain to get hold of with a graphics tablet, I can't understand the logic of the new brush engine... I won't go on but there is nothing new with 2.8 that is remotely useful to me. It actually hinders my ability to paint instead of helping.

:rofl you old geezer. :rofl
Actually I still have my first 1.2.5 from memory.
There are a lot of scripts for 2.2 that I would trade a leg for, maybe one day
Personally, I have not had so many GIMP crashes with other versions, 2.8.10 is very trying and tempestuous, but it grows on you.

Whereas I do use 2.8, I would probably revert back at 2.6 now and then if I could be arsed to set them both up. Gimp2.8 is the better program but some times it is much less responsive with a gfx tablet. I would make more of a fuss over it but as it is I don't use GIMP much for painting anymore; I mainly use it for manipulation tasks and adjustments. MyPaint - and to a growing extent, Krita - tend to be better tools than GIMP for digital painting artwork. It is after all what they were designed to be.

Multitile is a plugin; honeybee is one of it's many presets. You've not heard of Multitile since they axed it for GIMP 2.0. :)

I still prefer the older version, even though I' am using 2.8.
In the older version, i liked how the options for toolbox and docks had two seperate settings, the 2.6 main window was smaller, the save option for pictures and the scripts and plugins didn't load at the bottom either. The only things I wish 2.6 had was a rotating brush option and a python plugin.

hmm, 3 people mentioned lag, with the brush and I too have that, but I am on linux so won't bother trying to build an old version, but yes the brush does lag behind at times.

I use 2.8.10 and never had any problems until I tried 2.8.14. So I stayed with 2.8.10.
I have installed 2.9.3 but rarely use it.

2.8.16 fixes the lag problem...
