Took the name of one of the Gimp's developers.
How to get this with Gimp's text tool?

The one here I did a simple copy/paste.
But I needed similar characters to use on an envelope to be sent to Norway.
I use the KDE desktop and it comes with a character selector program.
I needed the ø and æ.
Done this before in Gimp-2.6,no sweat.
But in Gimp-2.8 this doesn't work unless you make use of the editor that's separate from the canvas.
When you want to paste the special character after picking it up from the selector bring your mouse pointer in the text editor to where you want it and press the middle button.

This can not be found in the Gimp manual!
I hope it's of use to anyone here.
Gerard.

Have you tried entering the character code directly?

shift-ctrl-u release
put in 4 digit code
then enter key

AFAIK standard linux but this is a PCLOS KDE machine.

Assuming the font has those characters, which is not always the case.

Thanks Rich,
The KCharacterselect program works a lot faster though.
Since you have KDE it should be available to you.
Gerard.

Sorry Gerard, I thought you were implying that it was impossible to enter non-keyboard characters directly into the on-canvas text tool.

I do of course know about the character selector applications and using the center mouse button to paste. Amazing that many people do not know that their scroll wheel 'clicks'.

Probably the same as Gentoo, PCLOS (also a rolling release now on KDE 4.14.3) center-button does not paste in Gimp.
but..ctrl-v still works much the same as any other application

Another option for you to explore, for frequently used (certain) characters, is the compose key. Especially useful for currency / accented characters / things like a degree sign.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compose_key

example.

That's exactly what I implied.I'm not a native speaker so maybe I didn't phrase it right.

With Gimp-2.6 you had to enter text in an editor.
When I use it in Gimp-2.8 I regarded the extra editor as superfluous so I never ticked it in the drop down menu.

Many thanks for the link!
I already used some of the key combo's but with what this link offers I have a lot more.
Gerard.
