I have a project where I need to create a truncated icosahedral, exhibiting the schlegel 6-fold symmetry.

Hm, it won't let me post a wikipedia example image here.

I need to get the angles of the lines perfectly, and I'm not sure how to do this with paths.

How can I accomplish this?

Secondly, I'll need to see how light from say the upper left reflects off of the surfaces. Can I do that in Gimp as well, or will another tool be necessary?

Thanks!

Is this what you're talking about?

Or is it more like this image below?

This last one is just for fun...

Close. Let's try this!

Made this using paths. It's not perfect, but it's pretty close.

@Wallace, that's neat! Good work.

However, I wasn't expecting anyone to make it for me, I was more interested in learning how to do it myself. Did you just trace the image with paths, or create it using some method to get the proper line lengths and angles, etc?

Thanks GammaLogic.
It's only a path tracing of the truncated icosahedral image. If you're not familiar with manipulating paths, this tracing may be difficult to do. Due to the fact that there are many intersecting paths, that do not connect to one another. I just eye-balled my paths, so it's not at all perfect. If you're looking to make it perfect, you'll need to apply mathematics, or a few measurements using the Measuring Tool and perhaps some Guide Lines to follow. I didn't use any of that, so it's not a geometrically sound representation. All the path lines are pretty much straight, with no curves added to them.
The Bevel Reflection Logo script was used to fill the inside shapes, on a transparent layer below the tracing. To get the lighting, I used Map Object to add the lighting, followed by a drop-shadow.
You could also fill each inner shape, by selecting it with the Magic Wand then filling each selection independently with the gradient of your choice. To try and match the direction of the light.
My intention wasn't to do the work for you. I merely wanted to offer you an example of how I went about doing it.

Wallace, thanks for the explanation sir. :) I'll take a look at the tools you've mentioned and see what I can accomplish!

You're welcome GammaLogic.
Good luck with this project and if you run into any roadblocks just let us know.
Just keep in mind that what I've explained is only one interpretation of how this can be done.
