I think that you can do two things. Write each letter in different layer, or better to write the whole text and then select each letter by selection tool to alter size and colour. :)

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

Put the text tool onto your canvas and type the desired text.
Within the text dialog you can see the font name, which is currently being used.
Highlight the text you wish to change. By left clicking and dragging your pointer across the text.
With the text you wish to change still highlighted, type in the first letter for the name of the font you wish to use.
In the case below I changed it from, Sans Bold Italic, to Beacon, with a size of 64.
I highlighted the font name within the text tools dialog and typed a "B" into this spacer.
By doing this a drop-down list of all the fonts I have available to use, that begin with the letter "B" appeared.
I selected the font Beacon form this drop-down list.
Changing the font of the words Hello everybody to a different font and then changing it's size.

in your picture "bad type in gimp" put a rectangle selection around "world" then go to bucket fill tool and change to color you want. and then touch bucket fill tool to each letter of word "world". touch only the letter. when done click select then click none to get rid of selection edit.[you don't need to use rectangle select tool at all for bucket fill tool to work.] See next comment by Wallace, It's an easier way to change color of text.

All the changes you want to make, can be done within the text editing dialog.
See attached image below.

And or fonts like Wallace showed you
It would be quicker to change all your text colour - (if your using only one) with a gradient or similar though.
