 Post subject: Where is the simple pointer

I have only just started using GIMP and I can not find the regular pointer. just the arrow pointer tool that selects items, i dont want to rectangle select or ellipse select or free select (lasso) just a point like regular mouse select . i cant seem to find it. am i missing something

I must say, I don't have a clue. With me, the pointer is just the regular pointer. Of course, on an image it will be a plus sign with a small symbol of the tool you have selected.

With Gimp one of the tools is always active and the mouse pointer will indicate which one it is. The measure tool is closest to a neutral tool as it does not alter the image in any way.

Maybe something closer to what you want. Go to:
Edit > Preferences > Image Windows
and then set:
Pointer mode > Tool icon

Sorry, you can change it in the preference section under the edit tab. Then click on "Image Windows" and in that field you can make it a pointer by choosing the pointer mode, but not a regular pointer.

i also changed my pointer, thanks wallace for the well explained tut.
putting the materials in color and appropriate size, I had already found that from the beginning
