It's really easy, it just takes a little explaining. In windows the splash is stored at C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\images. I recommend copying or renaming your original splash which is named gimp-splash.png. Then make your splash, name it gimp-splash.png and save it in place of the original. then when you restart gimp your new one will be there. There is a way to rotate splashes but i don't know how to do it.
Linux is basically the same process just a different path. i don't have Linux on so I don't off the top of my head know where it's stored but someone will tell you I'm sure. I have a dozen or so that i swiitch now and then. Right now as you can tell from my splash and sig I'm in my gold period.

You don't "need" to know how to change it, but it still is fun!

Actually, GIMP first looks for C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\.gimp-2.6\gimp-splash.png (Check the log output in verbose mode.) If that fails, it then goes to the Program Files directory.

It's always safer to put things in your user directory instead of the program directory.

Linux has the gimp-splash.png file stored here:
/usr/share/gimp/2.0/images

but I may make a new one and place it here:
/home/cecilia/.gimp-2.6

I've noticed that everyone's splash image is a different res. I take it that's ok?

Your monitor will only display 72 or 96 dpi, anything else is a waste of resources but even if you make them 600 dpi they will work. They'll just be bigger than they needs to be.

the original is 275 x 400 pixels.
I'll just keep whatever I design close to that. and while I have a ton of memory, I wouldn't want to waste it

i switch mine around from big ones to little ones. The one i have now is just a big one but I'll swap it in a while. You're right though, bigger ones tend to bog things down.
Well, as much as I'd like to sit and talk with my pals it's still very early and we're supposed to go pick blueberries so I'm out for a few hours.

You can just place a bunch of them in your
user/gimp-2.6/splashes directory create the directory first. (splashes)
Place all your images there.
This will cause Gimp to load a different splash image each time it loads the program. :)

The splash should be always called "gimp-splash.png" but older gimp allowed to use also animated gif (if renamed "png" )

not sure if that is still possible (and anyway a heavy image will or slow down loading or simply would be not dispayed )

On gimptalk we had several contest for gimp splash screen (for gimp 2.4 and 2.6 ) many of them could be easily adapted to 2.7 or 2.8

Well, my point was that you can make a 275 x 400 pixel image at 72, 96, 300, 600 or whatever ppi. The higher the ppi, the more memory it takes to use it. Since monitors display 72 or 96 ppi anything more is wasted.

I knew there was a way but forgot how. Thanks.

To the contrary, GIMP and most other display-oriented programs like browsers and picture viewers only care about pixels when displaying to the monitor.

A 400 x 300 px splash image takes the same amount of memory and displays at the same size regardless of the ppi.

Check it out for yourself. Create and image and save it at different ppi. Then look at the file size and image size on the monitor.

You can configure GIMP to display images in inches or mm, but the default is to display pixels.

The only programs that really care about ppi are printers and programs that are used primarily for creating printed output. (i.e. word processors)

unless I actually have to print something - which doesn't happen very often - I never touch the default 72 dpi.

I'm almost strictly "RGB"

Printers are concerned with DPI, monitors are concerned with PPI, they're not the same.
