What is it exactly? I understand it has something to with the menus?

It appears to be a way of searching the menus.

There's an ongoing discussion about it on the Developers mailing list:
http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-de ... enu-search
where one of GIMP's main user-interface designers questions the need for this.

If i understand well the point is that the usability guru doesn't like that for using it the hand can't be free to do other task on the keybord
the other critique is that ,as Rod already noticed it was not build on the main branch of the code but on a lateral one
(i beg pardon for the terminology i can't remember the exact english words
